Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all
We would like to spend Christmas week in a lovely European village where we can also ski. Where would you suggest?
- we would like a memorable Christmas with a lovely atmosphere in the town, that has things to do other than just ski (restaurants, bars, spa, shopping…)
- but family (kids are 18yo) are good skiers so skiing v important
- We have a good-sized budget for that week to make it special, so happy for higher-end suggestions
We have skied in Zermatt so looking for other options.
Thank you

Wengen, Kitzbühel, Lech, Saalbach would all be good. Varied chances of good snow but all got a bit going on and lovely scenery.

Lech is going to be difficult to beat, Wengen potentially wonderful but not particularly snow sure

@Thisskilife how much budget exactly?

I'd try Lech but that early is always a bit of a lottery.

Thanks all
Would prefer a very good chance of snow for reasonable skiing (as hard as predicting this can be).
Red_27: Budget is healthy, want to make it special.
Ski_for_fun: Yes, we mostly are away each Christmas so being away isn’t different for us

Lech is often recommended at that time of year so there must be a reason. Chamonix is going to always have a great vibe. Val Gardena for guaranteed piste skiing even if Mother Nature has provided no snow.

Does Lech have what it takes to entertain 18 year olds apres ski?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The truth is that Zermatt probably comes closest but you don't want to go there again. You are going to have to prioritise your criteria. Val d Isere does tick a lot of boxes but it is far from being an authentic village and doesn't have the best scenery.

For a best chance of a white village @Christmas, Lech is probably best of all authentic villages in the Alps. Better than Zermatt.
Lech is smaller village though. But with one of the best ski resorts in the world.
It does have some shops, great snow walking, great connections for meeting for lunch between skiers and non-skiers. Quiet aprés. A superb toboggan run with cablecar service (Oberlech>Lech). And some of the best hotels and restaurants of the Alps.

You know it makes sense.

Though Lech is one of the most snow sure resorts in the Alps so relatively low risk though obviously you never know for sure.
