Has anyone done it? Just trying to weigh it up as an alternative to LHR-VCE for a trip to Arabba next year.
Looking through the Birthday Bash history the vast majority of people use VCE, even those arriving a day early with an overnight stay. I know the Arabba Transfer service is a part of this but virtually no one arrives via VRN.
Very few VCE options from the Midlands so I have always used the BA LHR route and have reserved this for next year. The 0840 out and 1255 return are nice times for sensible alarm calls both ways and we haven't found parking too expensive, even with a hotel the night before. But there are some ridiculously cheap VRN flights for the same week. The downside is they are also ridiculously early (0600 out, 0945 return) at least on the return when a transfer of around 3hr15 is required. Google maps also seems to take me through Selva, Corvara and into Arabba from the north.
I do notice that Inghams BHX flights next year are to Verona with similar times so it is clearly possible.
Would be nice to know if it is just distance or the availability of Arabba transfer which keeps people coming back to VCE for Arabba. Or if anyone has used this route.
I am also not sure whether I am trying to convince myself to use VRN or not to use it! On my own I probably would, hiring a car, but with a group there might be some opposition to the transfer and transfer times. Cost is very similar (100-120 euros pp for a private transfer). Thanks for any insights

@toyah807, some years ago some friends and I flew into Verona for a stay in Ortisei/St. Ulrich, but of course Arabba is a fair bit further than Ortisei. Also the bus transfer to Ortisei went less than smoothly (it was with Terravision), the bus hadn't arrived at the appointed time, we then got a text message that it had broken down and a replacement would be sent. When the replacement arrived considerably more than a hour later we had only been on the bus for about 30 minutes when the driver pulled into a service area and announced it was now his 1 hour lunch break! Well, you know how important food is to Italians!
Incidentally I see Terravision only offer a service as far as Selva, so you'd either have to get a taxi from there to Arabba (or all the way from Verona airport) or hire a car.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Alastair Pink, thanks. You have highlighted most of my fears, plus my group was maybe spoiled by a 55min transfer this season! I have seen a quote for a private transfer both ways but the driver needing a break is definitely a worry if they are driving from VRN to pick us up at 0400 for the return. It probably trumps arriving back into BHX around 11am. Maybe if we were staying Val di Fassa or Selva side we could try VRN but we couldn't find anything comparable to the Bellavista at the price. Will have a look at car hire prices tho. Had not heard of Terravision

We've just driven from Verona to Colfosco in our motorhome.
We took the SS12 (non-toll) route as far as Trento then hopped on the Autostrada. The SS12 was an easy, scenic drive but the Autostrada will be far quicker for you.
We came from the North, from the Bruneck end. Although it seems out of the way it was quicker than it would have been on the twisty roads via Selva Di Val Gardena - in a motorhome, that may not be the same in a car
Bear in mind Google maps assumes you will be driving at the max speed limit of the road, which usually isn't possible in the mountains, especially if you are unfamiliar with the road.
Try mapping with Via Michelin - in my opinion it gives more realistic travel times.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Plus side Verona is a nicer airport compared to Venice in my opinion (Venice is on my list of airports I would rather never enter again if possible)
Downside you are adding about an hour to your trip time.
Inghams are using Verona next winter instead of Innsbruck for Italy with Tui flights.
I was told this was to try and avoid possible hold ups on Brenner pass due to work on a new railway tunnel?
Also less chance of weather issues at Vrona than Innsbruck

@Garfield, @Scamper, thanks, very helpful and makes sense. Google and Via Mich give different journey times but the quickest option for both would take me up through Canazei and over Passo Pordoi. Not sure I would fancy that at 4am and it certainly pushes me towards sticking with the more sensible flight times for VCE.

@toyah807,
Sounds like the sensible option, no-one wants to be fitting snow chains on an unfamiliar car at that time in the morning!!
