Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Bourg st maurice

I am thinking of a long weekend flying into Geneva, transferring to Bourg, then using the funicular morning and evening.

If we went outside of school holidays is the funicular a viable option? Does it get hideously busy? Is Bourg a good place for socialising?

We are tied to Geneva airport but can anyone suggest an alternative to Bourg as a base with accommodation available outside of the usual 7 days Saturday transfer, to access a snow sure ski area ?

I live in BSM year round so hopefully can offer some help.

Funi runs every day from I think 730 in the morning to 9pm at night (11pm on Thursdays). If the funi is busy (usually only when a TGV train arrives and lots of people going up to resort) they run extra ones at full speed, so you get up to Les Arcs 1600 in about 7-8 mins. Otherwise they run every 20 mins. If you hire skis from the intersport either at the top or bottom of the funi I think they let you leave your shoes etc there so you don't need to walk around BSM in your ski boots.

In terms of socialising it's not world class. I'm a single 32 year old bloke and it's not great! But there are some ok places, PSB brewery is open some nights during the week, Base Camp Hotel can be ok (and sells the beer I make! shameless plug) - then just some pubs on the old high street can be ok. The bar at the bottom of the funi is always busy after skiing but there's no 'apres'.

However because the funi runs quite late and the buses are dead easy, I often do apres in 1800 (normally at BouBous), and hop on the bus to 1600 (takes 10 mins) then get the funi down to go home.

You can get the train here too from GVA. Other towns I guess you could get to would be Brides Les Bains, Chamonix, and some Swiss resorts I guess?

Let me know if you have any other questions!

@Trickydicky, the funicular station in Bourg is a decent walk from wherever you may be staying too.

What’s the typical travel time for somebody landing in Geneva and ultimately arriving at Bourg via rail?

You seem to get a free single ride up and down in the funi if you show up with suitcases. We did have our train tickets for the ride up anyway but wouldn't have helped us get back down. @Orwell, took us about 3.5 hours from geneva changing in aix le bain on way out and chambery on way back, not including funi and navette. Had to allow a days travel each way but it all went very smoothly and was actually the easiest ski trip journey ive ever had. I have had a wife and 2 girls on all of my other trips though so it is a pretty bad benchmark Laughing
