Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

this might be a daft question, but who owns a ski resort, ski resorts are towns and villages, you cant just buy a town or village.

Depends on where you are talking about - in some countries ski resorts can be effectively company towns.

FWIW I interviewed the CEO of Televerbier yesterday and he categorically denied that they were selling to Vail Resorts (I have it on audio file...will be in Episode 206 of The Ski Podcast!)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Vail Resorts just announced new "product" ... it is called "MyEpicGear" and for yearly fee of $50 you get unlimited ski/boot rental at discounted price of $55/day. Valid at 12 major resorts in NA ...

https://www.myepicgear.com/

I know it might not be relevant to this discussion for some but I figured that people would want to become more familiar with Vail (MTN) business model before commenting further on this issue of potential European expansion.

Crikey, $55 is £43. How much do you normally pay for ski hire ?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I don't understand, what's the actual incentive? Why would you hire skis at that price? Especially seeing as they're already getting battered by lift pass prices.

~£260 a week is double the price of a normal (decent) hire.

Seems like Vail are doing their best to strangle the sport.

It's a discount on typical "premium" ski/boot packages in the sort of places Vail operates. Remember most people travel for a weekend and rent/ski 2 to 3 days.

$35 for basic package is about the cheapest I saw off hill ( I.e. put them in your car and drive) in a relatively cheap area.

The US doesn't do anything that is "normal" in Europe ski wise. Which is why I think Vail will ultimately struggle with their model in Europe.

The US “normal” is quite different from the European “normal, which is probably different than Brit skier “normal” rolling eyes
