Poster: A snowHead

We have the chance of a diy week in La Rosiere in March. Which is the best airport to fly to and what is the best way to get to the resort?
Would we have to hire a car and is the journey fairly straightforward?
Any help and advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks Loatie

Chambery is the closest airport and the drive from there is fairly straightforward. If possible try to avoid Saturday arrival or if not try and get to resort as early as possible. The route in shares access to a number of major resorts and the queues can be horrendous particularly if it is snowing and the police are making everybody put on snowchains as we witnessed leaving La Rosiere this year.

loatie, we believe that Geneva is the best airport to use, there's a greater choice of flights and carriers, there are more UK destinations and it's only 160 kms to La Rosiere, which can be driven in under 2 1/2 hrs on a good day. There is a regular Alps Bus service in the winter, takes about 5 hours as it stops at just about every major town on the way. Hiring a car is easy, from the Swiss side you're on the Swiss motorway system in less than 5 minutes from the airport. Follow the signs for Annecy, then Albertville, then the Taretaise. Driving directly from the UK is easy, it's autoroute all the way from the Channel ports to Albertville, then a good road to Bourg St Maurice, it's only the final 23kms from BSM to La Rosiere that is on a mountain road and because it's a Route National it has to be kept clear so it's regularly ploughed, although you may need chains for the final few kms, immediately after a heavy snowfall. Allow about 10 1/2 hrs driving from Calais or Boulogne.

lyon st. Exupery is another option. Should be no more than around 3 hours IIRC, and possibly an easier trip than geneva. Although if its saturday and a busy one the final run up the hill could be slow...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

That's true of just about anywhere. But other than the first 10 days in March, which are still French school holidays, it shouldn't be too busy.
