Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Turin Jan 2025 Family

Hi, Family of 5. Kids 12,10,8 - kids have two weeks ski experience, confident on blues and easy reds. Parents intermediate boarders, but I would like to learn to ski this year. Went to Flaine this year and loved it but always keen to try somewhere new and the Geneva flights have gone up. Need to keeps costs as low as possible, hence asking about resorts close to Turin as flights are cheap. Planning for January again as this seems to be the cheapest time for accommodation. Don't want to hire a car, but from what I can see, private transfer is the only option from Turin, is this correct or are there any shared transfer services? Looking at Cervinia, Montgenvre, SauZe d'ouix so far, the ski passes seem pricey for all these areas though and are really bumping up the cost. We don't need a huge area, but I would like lifts to be handy to accommodation, and some nice restaurants to go out to in the evening. Are there any other resorts you would recommend for a family? Thanks in advance for your help Very Happy

Pila (Aosta) would suit you.
Cervinia also
Monetrosa might be too many reds for what you are looking for, but is a great area.
I don't normally recommend Courmayeur for a week as the ski area is quite small, but that does not seem to be an issue for you. It's a lovely town with good restaurants and some relatively easy skiing.

Given your description I think Pila (stay in Aosta) might be the best pick for you.

The only resort i've been to near Turin was Montgenevre last year. Heading back again in 6 weeks. Family of 5. Kids aged 10,8 and almost 5. Worked well for us last year. Cheapish and very efficient transfer at €390. If you dont need a car during the week then i'd go for a transfer. Lift passes for a family of 5 for Montgenevre/Claviere would be about €900 based on this year's prices. I can't imagine that Flaine was cheaper?
Really good ski school for kids in Apeak (ESI). We self cater via GoMontgenevre - good selection of quality apartments convenient for slopes & ski school.
It also seems to do better snow-wise than the lise of Suaze.
It worked well for us last year hence we're going back. I don't think we'll go there forever but its a good resort with kids at those ages and levels of experience.

Montgenevre - you can do shared transfers with Snowcab, normally 70 euro return from Turin. Great family ski area and good snow record.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I think Montgenevre is a good shout for families and your range of skiing experience. Better than Sauze and Cervinia imo.

Cervina can be really ruthless weatherise in January especially with children , I’ve had one disastrous trip one day skiing out of six , wearing googles to go down the street wind was so bad . Please remember it’s at 2000m plus with no trees and is prone to being storm bound . Don’t get me wrong I like Cervina but would only consider in March or April , perhaps earlier at last minute with knowlage of weather forecast .
Pila’s a good call

Yes, Pila would be fine. Rather more manageable scale than Cervinia/Zermatt, and I imagine might well be cheaper for accommodation and eating. It's very "ungrand" and family oriented. But with small kids in ski school I'd recommend staying in Pila rather than down in Aosta.

I wouldn’t say Sauze is great for early intermediates or a beginner skier (albeit you’re already a boarder). Theres just not enough blue runs to give a good variety to learn on, the reds aren’t particularly challenging but they do very much outnumber the blues. Plus it can be a bit daunting as the meet for ski school is often at Sportinia which is up the mountain, depending where you’re staying in resort it could involve a ski down from Lago Nero which is only a blue track but would be pretty daunting if you’re putting skis on for the first time (there is a different lift that would negate this but involves a short resort bus trip).

I’ve only skied Montgenèvre three times (day trip ski over/back from Sauze each time) but I do remember that there were a couple of actually very enjoyable green runs, we expected them to be pan flat but the boarders in our group coped perfectly fine with them. All the bits of skiing we did there were far from challenging but fairly picturesque, and the snow was considerably better than the Sauze conditions we skied back to. Definitely worth a look. It’s a pretty short and easy transfer too which to us has been a huge appeal in recent years.
