I’m currently in Val Thorens and have hurt my shoulder pretty bad after crashing yesterday. Not dislocated and am sure there no broken bones but is extremely sore and range of motion is significantly restricted. I’m right on the edge of whether I should be going to the medical centre here or waiting to see how it is when I’m back in the UK on Sunday.
Was wondering if anyone had experience with Val Thorens centre? Good/bad experience? How expensive is it? (I have travel insurance so should be covered albeit with £99 excess)
Tbh I’m going back and forth between getting it seen or not and so looking for some opinions.

@snowEd, Whatever....Sling it now. Perhaps get it looked at on return.... would be one option. I wouldn't rule any form of injury out.
Based on my recent experiences, get painkillers in you. I wasn't given any other drugs.

The only thing I know about the VT MC is that it was featured in a TV series a few years ago and it seemed (as you'd expect I guess) to be very good.
However, I imagine you are near the end of your holiday and so it probably is logical to get some painkillers and struggle home.
I had a friend who did that a few years ago - he had an operation in the end.

Do you have private medical in the UK? If you're on the NHS and you wait till you're back in the UK, you're outside the 24hr window for A&E and are going to get stuck in the GP/specialist consultation waiting game. Much better if you have half an idea what's occured now so you can take Xrays etc back to the UK with you. I'm also thinking that if you start treatment in VT under insurance, they may cover private treatment on your return as part of the same claim?

@snowEd, Go to the medical centre and get some scans done so that you already know what's going on when you get home. If you haven't broken anything, you might just need some physio to get your range of motion sorted, but you don't want to be delaying this too much as that can cause problems too.

This plus anti inflammatory seeing as it's a joint, drugs and rest should do you well.
Did your arm get wrenched up or backward?

Think I'm right in saying that anti-inflammatories are not recommended immediately following a sprain type injury these days as it's recognised that the internal swelling is necessary to bring stem cells to the joint in order to effect a repair. Especially if it's a tendon injury, which is quite likely with a shoulder.

@Je suis un Skieur, insurance won't cover private in the UK. straight into the NHS on return. It may cover private physio though, in which case advising the insurer and getting seen now would be advisable

Ah you're right, seems the NHS now recommends keeping off anti inflammatory medicine for the first 48-72hrs. First aid is always changing at such a rate (and it can also be quite conflicting)!

Tbh I’m not fully sure but think I landed facing the mountain and jarred it, then subsequently twisted and landed directly on it.
I’ve been icing it this morning which I think has helped.
Think I’m gonna head to medical centre to get it checked out. Would kick myself if this results in long term issues which could be avoided by seeing someone early.
Thanks for all the replies.

@snowEd, I was there on 3rd Dec. Get yourself x-rayed. They were very efficient. Hope it’s not too serious. THere are too many of us on SH’s with various forms of humerus fractures at the moment-including me! The bill broke down to €251 for Doctor and X ray, €141 for nurse (I think that was the morphine jab and assisting with putting me into the fancy sling), and another €213 pharmacy bill (€159 of that was my fancy sling, which is more like a stab proof vest). They took a credit/debit card swipe which will not be activated if your insurance pays up in 30 days, but the pharmacy bill was paid up front.

That Val Thorens medical centre and piste rescue were featured in Ski A&E. All seemed very efficient to me.

As advised above by @holidayloverxx, do be sure to keep your insurer in the picture - they don't take kindly to being kept in the dark. Hope it clears up quickly. Shoulders are tricky.

I separated my shoulder (torn ligaments) in Montgenevre in April. Coffin off the mountain, x-ray, lots of painkillers and put in a sling. I was told to go to my doctor in the UK with the x-rays upon my return. The NHS consultant was excellent (referred after a visit to A&E) and told me that the outcome was no better whether I went for surgery or physio. They could have had me in for surgery the following day, but I opted for physio as the recovery period was shorter and I can live with a funky looking shoulder. I would heartily recommend visiting the medical centre for an x-ray/diagnosis - they see these types of injury every day and will put you on the right track. The cost for me was a couple of hundred Euro which I eventually got back through my insurance.

Update:
Went to medical centre. Had much the same experience as @Perty. Thanks very much for sharing your experience.
Turns out I’ve broken my collarbone. Not too bad a break and still in place. Needs to be in a sling for 5-6 weeks and told to get follow up X-ray back in the UK.

Ah that's annoying! Good that you went instead of waiting, the self care starts now!
Tip from someone who broke theirs years ago, follow the physio guidance to the letter, your back/neck/shoulder muscles are probably damaged and simultaneously trying to compensate for the weaknesses of their neighbours - this pain and strain will haunt you for years if you try and shrug it off. I was a stubborn 22yr old when I split mine in half, 16yrs later and it causes a lot of problems...

I broke my collar bone 13 years ago - first ski injury. I snapped mine and had it plated. It’s a 12 week recovery to be strong enough to lift. Sounds your break isn’t as serious. Ironically having mine plated meant I could drive after 3 weeks though I couldn’t lift my shoulder past the vertical or lift for 12 weeks. Good luck with recovery.
