Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Spring Break Ski Trip

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

I am currently planning a ski trip with some college friends (total of around 6, most likely) during our spring break this year. I’d stay we are all pretty advanced skiers (maybe one or two closer to advanced). I particularly enjoy deep snow, off piste, and tree runs.

We are looking for a more off the beaten path ski town with a true mountain atmosphere that’s not too busy (I know it’s spring break, but the less the better). As for budget, I’m not fully sure but I would say around $100-$200 per person per night for lodging. This trip would be during the second week of March. We would prefer to stay within the US as well.

We have looked at Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, and all the other big Utah resorts (and some in Colorado) for affordability’s sake but am wondering what else is out there. I went to Telluride a couple of years ago and is probably the best skiing I’ve ever done in the US, so something similar would be amazing.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks

Yeah, Telluride meets your criteria, and a place like that will help avoid spring break crowds, which you'll find in more easily-accessed places like SLC. Check the timing of the breaks where you want to go, you might get lucky as they vary.

But since you've been to T-ride, I'm going to suggest a trip to Grand Targhee with a side trip to Jackson Hole if you wanted to. It won't be crowded and there's plenty of snow. GT is a terrific unknown gem of a ski area worth the effort to get to. All kinds of terrain, long high speed chairs with a ton of vert, and lots of great snow. Driggs is a neat little town with lots of affordable lodging options, especially in the VRBO realm. Also has very good Thai and Italian restaurants, and great BBQ down the road in Victor. There is also lodging at the hill but to me it looks kind of dated. And they have comparatively affordable lift tix....$120-140/day. For comparison, JH is over $200 and Snowbird is around $150.

So check out Wydaho! I will be doing so late this month and will issue a report.

@lrivera817,
Not Europe? I thought Spring Break was all about university students getting drunk - plenty of opportunities this side of the pond, especially with our sensible drinking age laws.

Take a look at Whitefish and Schweitzer, especially if on a budget. Great mountains towns IMO and off the beaten path.

Second week of March is as late as I would recommend. Our winter has FINALLY gotten started, but there are still sticks showing. Should be fine by then. A huge storm is forecasted for tomorrow.

St Moritz?
3 Valleys?

If you don’t know where those are, it’s because they’re in Europe. And this is a UK based ski forum where most people ski in Europe.

^all true, but in no way responsive to the OP's query. "...prefer to stay in the US". Plenty of folks here know a lot about skiing over here, including you.

Actually, I only know about the skiing. I don’t know what a bunch of college kids want for their spring break!

That said, if the OP likes telluride, aspen should be right there.

Don’t know about lodging cost, just don’t forget to budget the $100+/day lift tickets wherever you go.
