Hi, we are travelling to Madonna di Campiglio on March 2nd for a week and flying into Verona airport. I would like to take a rental car from the airport but am concerned about driving up the mountain without winter tyres which appear to be very difficult to get in Italy (we had these in Austria and had no diffculties driving in snowy conditions. Does anyone have experience of this route and can advise? One option might be to park the car in a nearby town in the valley and take a taxi/bus up?

I thought winter tyres were compulsory in that part of italy. The road has always been fine when i've driven up, but maybe I'be been lucky. Rental company can all supply chains.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The rules in Italy are winter tyres OR snow chains in mountain areas, so most of the rental companies just put a set of chains in the boot.
I usually just book a car with chains, as it doesn't snow that often or that heavily in the Dolomites. In March it should melt away very quickly on the tarmac. Usually the biggest issue is the car park of your accommodation!
I went with Locauto at Verona 2 years ago. I was expecting chains in the boot, but the car had winters fitted. It was lucky as we did have a fairly heavy snowfall one day. The roads were ploughed and gritted and clear again by the next day though.
Try Hertz or Sicily By Car, as some have said that these offer guaranteed winter tyres, at a substantial extra cost.

There is a train to past Trento and a taxi from there but there is a shuttle bus from Verona to Madonna

@JasonOster, To get back to your original point about the drive to the resort Madonna is the only place in the last 10 years that I havew had to put chains on ...its the drive out of the resort that was my problem its OK going but coming back out there is a steepish hill out ...mind you it did put a meter down on the last day

Thanks all, really useful. Has anyone else had a rental car with winter tyres from Verona Airport?

@JasonOster, try Sicily by car, they have winter tyres and 4x4s at Venice, and I think they also listed Verona.
I’ve booked a Jeep 4x4 with Winters for €190 ish for 7 days.

Try Hertz, we got a “winterised” car from them for exactly that drive.
The route is easy and lowish until Pinzolo which isnt far from MdC, so worst case you could park the car there and get a taxi. Then ski over for your car when the roads are clear.
We’ve been to MdC quite a few times and only had snow bad enough to cause travel problems once. We’re actually en route atm.

Their website doesn’t appear to be working, or is that just me?

Thanks, good suggestion, what category car did you order from Hertz? And does ‘winterised’ mean they could just provide snow chains?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

So all hire cars from northern Italian hire care companies during winter should provide chains by law. Winterised was an option which added winter tyres and maybe applied to 4x4s. We’ve had a jag e pace and a fiat panda both with winter tyres (one extreme to the other and the panda was more expensive!). And actually I think the latter was from Avis, hired via BA which is sometimes good for a deal.
One more thing IIRC when the snow is bad the buses doing transfers to Verona take the longer route via Marilleva as this isn’t as steep as going via Pinzolo. We’re driving via Marilleva on Tuesday so I’ll let you know if I got that wrong.

Drove up from Marilleva today, still has some sharp corners but easier route than via Pinzolo.

You know it makes sense.

Thank you @richb67, will do that route.

@JasonOster, Sicilys site wasn’t working over the weekend, it was back up yesterday, I was getting a bit concerned, but it seems all OK now.
I’m sure you know, but take own insurance policy to cover excess, I have an annual one for about £35, and take a video of the car on collection and drop off to record any issues.
