Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Any decent Geneva car hire deals around?

Not needed until 20th April when we head to VT, but need to book a car at some point.

Anyone seen any deals? What chance of winter tyres that late in the season?

Cheers all.

I tend to book Europcar as soon as I book flights then keep an eye on prices as you can cancel for free. I had an ID3 booked for a 10 day trip in March at £569 and last night it was down to £457 - so prices look pretty good right now.

Sixt out of French sector include chains/socks - plenty sub 500 deals when I last looked last week.

A quick look at argus car high shows a 7 day rental from the french side as £331 and the swiss side as £271. The swiss side is often less expensive than the french side. Both these needs some investigation. As others have pointed out a vignette may be required if hiring from the french side or an extra charge when leaving switzerland from the swiss side. These prices look good to me.

As you are booking in April I doubt if winter tyres would be included.

And my mate has, after a nudge from me, just had a Europcar ID3 reduced from £462 to £303 - which he’ll charge at our place. Beers required, I think!

i thought it was usually the other way around, with the French side generally being found to be less expensive on the headline price.

I'd hit something like SkyScanner and book the cheapest deal that works for you now... specifically the cheapest deal that includes free cancellation.

If prices drop nearer the time, cancel and book a cheaper deal. If prices go up, feel smug knowing you have a cheaper deal than if you'd waited.

It varies which is why I check both sides. I usually prefer to hire from the French side especially if I only have carry on baggage as it is more convenient, with the collection point actually being in the terminal and a nice cafe if you are waiting for someone else on a different flight.

@Mjit, also check whether there’s a charge to take it to France. There is for Hertz (€30) but not for Europcar.

Cheers all. Never thought about French or Swiss side, so will look into that.

I'd like to think that chains will be enough in April.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I saw some very strange pricing policies last year, albeit for a summer trip. I checked all the companies directly, and a lot of the auto Europe type sites and prices varied wildly from week to week. Eventually I got an Alfa Stelvio from Sixt via Expedia for £130 less than a Fiesta from Hertz! You just gotta do the leg work & keep going back until you get a deal you like. You’ve plenty of time, but I’d get a fall back deal in my pocket as early as possible just in case (there are usually plenty of free cancellation offers)

Looking at this again, it seems that CH is the much cheaper side over FR. Is there anything I should be considering, other than price? Nice early flight, so don't need to stress abut getting to VT too quickly.

My knowledge on this is very limited - not hired in FR or CH before - but can't think of any reason NOT to use the CH side?

Check what/if any cross border fees the hire company you are looking at charge. It’s a bit of a faff getting to the pick up point for CH hire cars as you either have a 10/15 minute walk or wait for the bus whereas the French side is in the terminal and just a couple of mins walk.

@SHAP, Avis CH takes about a tenner a day cross border charge, others may vary as indicated above.

@andmelffion, Thanks, that makes sense. @snowdave, Hadn't realised it could be a daily charge - that evens thing up quite a bit.

Over many years I've found no consistent price difference between renting on the Swiss or French side. It's useful that cars on the Swiss side generally have both winter tyres (in winter) and a motorway vignette.

I agree that you need to do the initial legwork - and then keep checking that there are no better deals on offer. Very tedious.

That's a completely different question as to whether chains will be needed in April. Quite possibly, if there's a big snowfall, same as in January! Most often, they're not required but there are no guarantees! If the weather continues as it is, people going skiing in April will be sacrificing to the Gods for a massive snowfall!

It’s unclear (at least to me) what the justification is for the cross border charge, whether it’s insurance orsomething else. I think we’re talking about the same fee tho.
