Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi,
I'm taking my 3 lads to Les Gets last week in Jan. Ages are 5, 7 and 9 and it's all of their first time skiing. Will I need a lift pass or is the nursery area free? I plan on purchasing mine and my wife's pass online beforehand and wondered whether it was worth making the most of the online discount?
Many thanks

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Albeit their first time if at all sporty (and probably even if not) I’d think they’d be off any nursery slopes with free lifts easily before the end of the week.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@tomb, are the kids booked into lessons?
Either way, the very beginner area is around the white cross/grand cry and you need to either get the bubble up to it, or the 6 man chair and ski down to it. Both of which need a ski pass.
There is usually a family discount. Can’t remember how many you need to qualify, but you’re there or there abouts.

Yes, all booked in with ecole 360, might be worth contacting them. Discount is 10% for 4 people or more.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

In that case, they’ll be all over the hill during the week, probably up and over into Morzine after a few days. I’d say they will definitely need a lift pass. Just the LesGets/Morzine pass, not the wider PDS one.

Ask the ski school.

The beginners' area in Chavannes (two magic carpets, to ropes) is free but ski schools meet at the bottom so they'll probably need passes - do check with the school.
But of course I doubt kids would still be there after 1/2 day, max 1 day. So the next step is the "petite glisse" pass (https://www.lesgets.com/en/lift-pass/petite-glisse-ski-pass/). Imho not worth it with the current snow cover, but end of Jan is far, by then anything can happen.
So in the end... get a Les Gets pass. Not a PdS. LG (includes Pleney side of Morzine) will be well enough for a first time, if you really need to go to Avo just go by transport or car for the last day.

All the above advice is great, I just want to add my kids started skiing at Les Gets when they were 3 and 4 (they are now 12 and 13, both love skiing!) and it's been a really good place for them to learn. After a few days they could get up and down the Chavannes chairlift with help from mum & dad and all around the Grand Cry area. It's a great resort for families (we've managed to always get snow despite some poor early seasons), and so close to Geneva, makes the trip really easy. I hope you have a great time!

Worth getting in touch with Ecole 360. There used to be a discount on lift passes for people taking lessons possibly 30 or 40%, sorry can't remember. We had already arranged passes with the "tribu" 10% discount so they organised a refund from the lift company.

Thanks all, I've emailed ecole 360 to ask but I imagine I'll end up getting the 5 passes beforehand.
I don't suppose anyone on the thread has any experience with the rentable ski lockers near the bottom of Chavannes? Would they fit 5 pairs of skis plus boots?
Again thanks for info all!

you probably wont need a liftpass for the kids on the fitst day, bt the instructor will advise you for the rest of week (may be easier to just purchase)
with regards to lockers, its a while since ive been, but onr of the hire shops in the centre has lockers to hire (free with hire)

@tomb, the ski school will be busy. If you don't get a swift reply to your email, phone them.

@tomb, do you have your own skis or are you renting?
I normally rent my skis from sports2000 (100 metres away from the Chavannes lift) and storage for your skis and boots (even if they are your own boots) are complimentary in the heated store room. Even if you have your own skis/boots and others in your group are renting, they are normally happy to accommodate you for a nominal fee. Last time for me it was about €15 for the week, whereas the ski locker at the Chavannes lift station was €15 a day and unheated.
They definitely won’t fit 5 pairs of skis let alone boots either!

You know it makes sense.

@Timmycb5, that's great info thanks! I'll look into hiring the skis with sport2000! I have my own skis and boots but everyone else is renting.
Our accommodation is a 10 minute walk from the lifts which would likely turn into a 30 minute walk if the kids are in boots and carrying skis!
