Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Via Lattea or Aosta, Jan 2024

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi this is my first time posting here. 21M in uni, skied mostly in Utah and Colorado. Study abroad in France and I planned a solo trip around Italy so I would love to get some pow before going back to Paris. Last leg of the trip is going from Milan to Paris. Jan 11-13 is reserved for skiing.

I already booked a return ticket from Sauze d'Oulx. Upon checking the snow report I noticed it is not getting much snow action (10cm forecasted but no major storms after new years). On the other hand, La Thuile is supposed to snow a lot?? supposedly 25cm in the next 9 days.

I only have 2 full days to ski, and accessibility/budget does matter to me. Apres ski as well. Oulx seems best because it is on the way to Paris, but I do not want to ski on ice or grass. I can rent a car if that is more economical (public transport scarce). Or anywhere else you would recommend that is getting some snow storms?

Would love to hear especially those who skied in these two resorts this year but I am open to other suggestions.
Thanks!

Both will be fine - 10 days of snowy days forecast from new years eve so should be perfect for anywhere in that area (in fact most of the alps) for that weekend.

Its impossible to predict which micro climates will dictate which resorts are getting more than their fair share over that period.

Sauze / Oulx is probably a lot more accessible from public transport /taxi, than La Thuile, which is a bit of drive up the side valley from the main Aosta valley.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

La Thuile gives you the option of skiing over to France, if the conditions are better in the Tarentaise.

Indeed La Thuile is linked to La Rosiere in France, and Montgenevre, also in France is part of the via Lattea, so I'm not sure cross border skiing opportunities are going to be a deciding factor.

If the OP does though, remember its always preferable to eat in Italy (cheaper a better) and watch out for wind shutting the connections back.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If you are already going to Sauze d'Oulx.
La Thuile is more snowsure, but quite a distance and you pay toll on the autostrada. Expensive and a hassle for 2 days.

I snow is bad on the Piemonte side, go to Val Cenis which is on the other side of the Frejus tunnel. When the eastern side of the southern alps is dry (which is where Sauze and Bardonecchia are), then normally the western side is better. Val Cenis is a very nice ski area, about 140 kms of slopes, many of them long and with large height difference up to 1400 m (4200 feet).

On the public transport, it'd have to be car from Oulx to Paris (or at least Modane) as the train tunnel is still closed I think. Oulx has a train station so that's easy from Milan/Turin, there are buses up the hill and round to Sestriere.

For La Thuile it'd be train to Aosta then bus to La Thuile (with a change at Pre St Didier) - more straightforward than it sounds, we did it to ski La Thuile for a day from Aosta. For Paris, there's a flixbus from Aosta to Geneva (which we got when we got stuck after the landslide that put the above Oulx Paris line out of action!) then you can train to Paris from Geneva.

Alternatively, you can go to Turin from either Aosta or Oulx and get a flix bus from there.

Either way you may prefer to drive!

Skiing in La Thuile is really nice and it's fun to go over to France, plus you can get a quick bus to Courmayeur for a day if you wanted to mix it up.

When did this landslide occur? And until when is the tunnel + rail out of order?

@Onnem, August. Our train was about 10 mins from the area - got sent back to Turin and had to re-route via Aosta.

Looks like they are now going to start some kind of rail replacement bus... https://www.railtech.com/infrastructure/2023/12/13/sncf-announces-partial-reopening-of-rail-link-between-france-and-italy/
