Anyone ever been to this resort/group of resorts..........have an offer of an apartment close to here this coming February , relatively small but altitude range pretty good as in 1700 to 2300, apart from myself group beginners/second time skiers who don't need 100''s km's or blacks etc.......?

@Sneachta2013, I don't know the area apart from driving past it on my way to Perpignan. I am in the Pyrenees though. Whilst 1700m is relatively high, it's pretty much lower end in the Pyrenees. There's not many places lower than that with reliable snow. However, it's February and should be fine. It's early and late in the season when that might be more of an issue.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It is an awfully long time since I stayed in and skied in Font-Romeu - well into the last century. At that time snowmaking was in its early days and FR claimed (probably truthfully) that it had more artificial snow than anywhere else in Europe. Certainly at the time (January) there was not much natural snow around and we generally skied on a thick carpet of artificial. I remember it being generally quite gentle and tree lined and certainly suitable for early skiers. A nice village as I recall more famous for athlete high altitude training these days. There are others areas in French Catalonia which are easy to get to, should you get bored.

@Sneachta2013, I've been a few times, but not for over a decade. It's definitely small, but would suit beginners. Even the (one?) black piste is pretty relaxed. It's actually two linked resorts - Font Romeu and Pyrenees 2000. As you say, altitude is not bad, but it doesn't always have the greatest snow record. Weekends are busy with people coming up from Perpignan and Barcelona. I've never skied a full week solely there as we had family living in FR so we used to head out to some of the other Pyrenees Catalanes resorts nearby - Les Angles, Puigmal, Puymorens.
It's very French and pretty low-key. Definitely about far as you get from a French mega-resort. But I would still avoid half-term at all costs.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Big ‘mercy buckets’ to all for your responses…I shoul add we will be flying to Barcelona and hiring a car for the week so exploring the various adjacent unlinked ski areas won’t be too much of an issue…..there should be plenty for a 9, 11, 13 and 15 year old on their second ever ski trip…..not so much for me though but I’ll probably spend all week instructing them…

FR was a great couple of days. Ax les Thermes is a great place if you you want a day away at a bigger resort

I often day trip to Font Romeu, should be there next weekend if the snow keeps falling, fingers crossed.
As a town with all mod cons it'll be a good base for staying in the area. The Super U and Lidl are in Egat. Avoid the casino supermarket in Pyrenees 2000 unless you're just going to grab a loaf of sliced white and a bottle of milk, otherwise you will get fleeced !
The domain has a fairly fast modern lift system and a brand new higher capacity gondola up from town this winter, but the best access is still by driving up to Les Airelles or la Calme. Be warned that the lift queue at la Calme is a pinch point. Les Angles is 15 minutes drive away and similar in size, but has less cannon coverage. It's because of this that when conditions in the region aren't great FR gets very busy. Smaller hills of note in the area are Porte Puymorens, Formigueres and Cambre d'Aze, which has the most vertical drop in that part of the world. Puigmal after several attempts to rescue from crippling debt has closed down indefinitely, but you can access the pistes with touring gear.
If you wanted to venture further afield both la Molina and Pas de la Casa are under an hour's drive away.

Been years since FR plus Les Angles trip, but well worth it, as long as you have a car to explore... No crowds, great food, good prices etc if it's as was.
