Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi Guys, been a while since I've been on here.
I'm going with the twins over new year. My daughter has just had braces fitted to her teeth - top and bottom.
I'm looking for up-to-date advice re protecting her braces/teeth.
Links to gear would be helpful.
Thanks

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Is there anything in particular you are worried about? When were they fitted? It may take week or two to get used to them but after couple weeks they shouldn't feel uncomfortable.
Will they ski or snowboard? If ski then there is a risk of a fight using poles which could damage braces. Check your insurance and make a list of local orthodontists to avoid panicking if something happens.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@marodo2712, Just ask the orthodontist. I played Rugby as a teenager with Braces and the solution was to get a moulded gum shield that protected the lips. Teeth are not going to be an issue. If they're not fitted then just take them out when skiing.

Am in same boat, boy with braces. But I don’t see how skiing could affect them or how you could protect them short of having gum shields which isn’t practical. Also gum shields that I’m aware of only cover the top.
I think just avoid crunchy foods which could easily make a bracket come off (ours did). And bring some wax.

@puddingdo, I think the wax is the best suggestion yet.

What are you worried about? I had fixed braces top and bottom and skied for about four seasons when I was a teenager.
Parents overthink things these days...

@homers double, not me lol. I have two teenagers with braces and have never considered this an issue!

As a retired orthodontic practitioner my advice would be no need for any protection. We used to do mouthguards for contact sports like rugby, but they are very bulky to fit over the brackets, there’s no need for skiing (unless racing slalom!).
Take some comfort wax in case of irritation.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
