@swskier, I also do like you showed in your second photo, but when it's too cold(-10C or lower), I feel that the buff is just too thin and not effective enough in keeping me warm

Lots of stuff works. I rarely ride when it's warmer than minus 10.
I use some cycling "buff type" thing around my neck, but when it gets colder I stick the hood of my Arc Atom hoodie up under my helmet and it's all good. A balaclava would do the same thing I guess, but I'm carrying the hood on the back of the mid-layer anyway, so that seems the easiest solution and I can't forget it, plus it's neatly adjustable.
Burton's Anon does "MFI" ... which is a different way to seal the gap between the goggle bottom and... everything else.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yep, those ones are amazing! When the time to replace my goggles comes, I'll probably get some M4s!

It doesn't go up, that's the maximum it goes, it's just a low cut line.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I got a motorbike balaclava years ago. But last year bought a snazzy Blackstrap one but they don't really seem to be available in Europe unless at import prices.

The Alps no longer get cold enuf for a balaclava
Very rare to see them, nowadays.

 You know it makes sense.
|
Main problem with balaclavas which have more coverage is when the goggles sit on the fabric of the balaclava when worn . This almost guarantees that the exhaled warm vapour will get inside the goggles and cause fogging .

Used to do the usual buff over head/chin; then got given a decent/thin bala, and would not go back - the business, and if too hot you just roll it down.

The Icebreaker one has a breathing hole/ opening and is more ninja than bank robber. TBH I've never really had to resort to it but it feels like it would do the job well when required.
