Poster: A snowHead

Have just got back from a holiday walking in the Masif Central / Auvergne region of France.
There are a couple of ski resorts there: Super Lioran and Super Besse/Mont D'Or being the main ones.
Has anyone every skiied in either of these resorts?

Skied them both and some others. There are about 25 ski resorts in total. I'm reluctant to reccommend them to the average Brit skier who seems to get bored if he doesn't have at least 300km of pistes for a week's skiing whereas I'm quite happy with a hill and a lift for a few days.
Watch out, le Mont Dore is the "in" ski resort in France at the moment and it is partially my fault. My web page has featured in a number of magazines and was on the French national TV news this winter:-

I learned to ski in MD back in 1975 - a time of prodigously snowy winters. You could ski to the town in April back then. That said MD was open to the first weekend of May this year, one of the longest seasons ever.
Here is some info on Le Lioran, probably the better resort for the general piste skier. Both are easily accessible by rail.

sH: IanS used to live in the area and may give you some more info. The Auvergne has recently been discovered by the Brits and prices are sky rocketing. Cute villages like St Nectaire are completely unaffordable (at least to those of us more used to French wages). Five years ago I could have bought a cottage in good conditions for 25 grand, now you are lucky to see a great deal under 100,000K. There are some very nice Cotswoldy style buildings too.

davidof, You state in your web page that Mont Dore is only second (or should that be fourth) to La Grave, Chamonix and Bareges for lift accessed off-piste couloir skiing.
I have been looking for challenging off piste for many years and I know nothing about Bareges - I thought it was all easy stuff there. Could you tell me about it or give me a website address?

Cedric, do you mean the Mont Dore bit? Can't remember if you have skied La Grave / Alp d'Huez? A must.

Apart from Arno's link why didn't you just click on "Bareges" on the page you were looking at, there is more info than you can shake a large stick at ?
|
Ah, too easy. (somehow didn't click that all those names were links). Thanks, interesting.

Here is a clip from the French National TV news
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8059746201604333068
from the end of April last year, it shows you a bit more of the skiing at Mont Dore and talks about a certain "English" website, click on the [CC] box on the bottom right of the video to get English subtitles.
The good thing about MD is there are no real climbs to access the couloirs and they are relatively short - 250 - 400m but very steep but the exposure is not too great.

I first ever skied in Mont Dore!!!! We were on holiday in the surrounding area and came across the ski resort and I asked mum if I could have a go at skiing... and the rest is history. We went to Super Besse in the following years too.

kosciosco, Its a problem to book Mont Dore / Super Besse long time in advance, if there is snow the skiing is ok, but the problem use to be the lack of snow, more rain than snow, even in january and february, But if its have been a dump there, its real good, and to spend a week there is not a problem MD have nice and step offpistskiing, even if its short,
So if U follow the weatherforecast and go there if its fresh snow and degrees below zero, U will have a nice week,,
