Hi everyone .. long shot but we are looking for accommodation for 8 people ( two families of 4 - ideally two apartments) in La Thuile for this Xmas week or pre Xmas week( l know it is very last minute but for several reasons couldn’t book earlier ) . Our friends already going to this resort so we wanted to join them but looks like we missed out on Planibel with Crystal, so l wonder if there might be any owners on here who might have availability or else any other recommendations for affordable accommodation in La Thuile ?

@Bella2015, have you checked Planibel’s own website? https://www.hotelplanibel.it/. Alternatively AirBnb seems to have accommodation (without knowing your precise dates)

Thank you . Yes l have looked at Planibel website, seems a possibility but again check in and out dates not ideal ( and cost a lot more than with TO) and for some reason doesn’t allow to book two apartments online , will try calling them today

For dates around Christmas - a peak week - you will struggle to find anything other than the standard check in/out dates.

An update- l have actually contacted Crystal again and ask them to enquire with Planibel if they would have two more apartments for us for the Christmas week- they requested Planibel and said yes! So we were able to book the deal we originally wanted, even a little cheaper. Overall ended up being significantly cheaper than booking the same independently and the dates work better , haven’t booked with Crystal before but the price was good, hopefully will be ok

@Bella2015, good news. We really liked La Thuile and the studio apartment in Planibel was fine for two of us. If you’re eating out, try La Grotta in the village, short walk from Planibel, great pizzas Fingers crossed for great conditions for you

Well done @Bella2015. We have stayed there: the Planibel complex is pretty ugly but the apartment we had was fine, certainly better than the usual French shoe-boxes.
The restaurants at the lift base were OK at best, much better to walk 10-15 minutes down to the village proper where there were some decent proper Italian family-run restaurants. We also went with Crystal that time, and the rep was able to give us suggestions and make bookings.

@Montan, @j b, thanks for recommendations! Looking forward.. l understand there are two ski hire shops near Planibel. Any advice on which one is better? Or should l get the ski hire via Crystal?

Crystal will have an arrangement with one of the shops. When we were there I seem to remember it was at the corner of the block near the snow front, and its staff seemed quite knowledgeable. But I don't remember what it is called.
Tour operators claim to have arranged good value deals with the ski shops they use, and of course it is helpful in budgetting to know the cost up front, but at the end of the day you would have a good chance of getting a similar discount from the headline price just by contacting them in advance.

@j_b: The ski rental shop directly across the road from the snow (beginners' area) is Only Ski (Planibel).
If you book online they can deliver to your apartment (which we have never tried) or to a locker in the basement which you can use for the week. The lockers are very useful if staying in the main village (i.e. a walk away), but not so much so if you're in Planibel itself. Either option allows you to avoid the usual craziness on the first morning of you holiday in picking up skis, boots, etc.. You can also rent a locker for the week if you have your own skis & boots.
P.S. If you're into steaks, I'd recommend Le Coq Maf.

@Bella2015, I’ve done La Thuile at Christmas/New Year a few times. I’d recommend booking your restaurant of choice at least a day in advance to avoid disappointment (especially being a group of eight).
Also request with Crystal to be located as far from the Kings night club as possible. We usually take a 2/3 person apartment which are at the other end of the set up, so it isn’t an issue. But one New Year we were in a larger 4-6 person apartment and it was right above the exit of the club. It was a nightmare with loads of loud drunks pouring out in the early hours, the sound proofing is negligible.

@j b, @wsirhc, @dode, thank you for advice! Will look into Only Ski - delivery to apartments sounds tempting. And will definitely ask to be placed as far away as possible from the night club!
Btw does anyone know if WIFI is ok in Planibel apartments - l can live without one but my kids will probably hate it
