UK MSM nonsense. Dozens of French ski resorts have closed over the years due to no snow

the top height of La Sambuy was 1,800m with the resort sat at 1,100m and it had 3 lifts. Hardly news worthy. Loads of little family places have closed due to finances over the years with no reporting.

It's a strange article as it focuses all the 'lack of snow' reasoning on the 22/23 season, which we know had a really poor Feb/March, which are the really key months for most resorts (but especially the lower ones). I'm not doubting that they “used to have snow practically from 1 December up until 30 March” - and the season has got shorter but it feels like there are other underlying reasons to the closure (finances?) but the article has chosen to lead on a more dramatic line.

Just off the top of my head the Col de l'Arzellier and Ceuse were bigger than la Sambuy and have both shuttered recently. 200 areas closed in France according to this website: https://stationsfantomes.wordpress.com/ and that is not a complete list
The ski seasons are less certain than in the 70s / early 80s when a lot of current infrastructure was built
but also:
1. changing tastes - people prefer to ski the big ski areas, and less local skiers, ski clubs, school groups etc.
2. the state is less inclined to finance loss making ski resorts
3. energy costs have sky rocketed - Meaudre / Autrans plans to shut a lot of lifts this winter due to running costs
la Sambuy also has a chair which is expensive to maintain and run. If the area just had a few drags it would probably stay open. The snow isn't too bad in the area.

1 December, really? Even Tignes doesn't really make that claim!

This.
There are 300-600 abandoned ski resorts, and 5-10k abandoned skilifts, in the European Alps in 2023.
Been closing down since the 1980s and accelerating from the 2010s.

Doesn't mean it's not a disaster for the people who have worked there, though, or that the pace of change is not likely to accelerate.

and it's gonna go quicker. I'd say that the pace of change likely over the next 20 years (compared to the last 20) due to climate change probably IS something new.

It’s a shame. 20e for a day pass is very affordable.
The terrain there looks rocky however so I can imagine if they don’t have effective snowmaking they are always going to struggle these days. 40 yrs ago it would have been very different.

The col de l'Arzelier mentioned in the article was sabotaged by locals who were fed up paying taxes to subsidise the ski area. Shame as it was always nice skiing. Chateau Bernard, in whose territory it was located, had its own small ski area but the lifts were taken out around 2000. It doesn't feature in the "200" list on the stationsfantomes.wordpress.com website so there must have been loads of villages with ski lifts that no-one remembers or knows anything about (St Meme in the Chartreuse had some lifts but no-one knows anything about these, they run until the mid 1960s)
