Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi guys, have finalized my decision to go to Chamonix or Val D'anniviers (Chandolin) around Christmas for 5 days.
From what I gathered:
pros for val
-Val will be much quieter, and easier on the slopes and busses but also less food options and less drinking options
-Val has better on piste skiing?? of the 5 days, if i did cham I would probably only do 1 off piste with a guide since i will be solo. But could also do couermayer one of the days.
-Val is more snow sure
pros for chamonix
-Val seems more disconnected. The busses seem easier to manage in chamonix than Val??
-Val has more T-bars, hate T-bars
-love french food so would love to gorge myself with chamonix food
-could do couermayer
-have a free 5 day pass with my ikon pas
s
Am I missing anything?

@newyawk1234, No view on Chamonix as never been there but know the Val D’annivers quite well , if I was going to the Vald’annivers around Christmas I would only be choosing Grimentz to stay in, Chandolin is a bit on the edge of area rather than the heart , it’s also a bit small .

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@newyawk1234, Can you look at Grimentz in Val D'annivers as an option? Less T Bars from memory and connected to Zinal. Chamonix is more of a "town" but personally don't like getting the bus at all myself!
Are there any other options with the Ikon pass?

Need to bear in mind that in Chamonix there will often be little snow at resort level. That might not matter to you, though.
I don't know Val d'Annivers but there's plenty of piste skiing for a week in Chamonix. Just not all in the same place!!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Val d'Anniviers isn’t on Ikon, is it? Have I missed a point?
You are massively more likely to find ski chums in Cham.

@newyawk1234, thought that.
PS, round here, "Val" typically/ often refers to Val d'Isère

Hard choice as both absolutely worth it to stay there and ski.
As I'm with the others regarding staying in Grimentz, added to your Ikon pass conditions, the balance looks tilted at this point to Chamonix.
I don't understand where lack of piste skiing comes from in this location. Admittedly the whole off piste, guiding etc capability here may dwarf many other locations in scope, but it doesn't fully account for just how much there is to ski when "constrained" by being on piste.
I've skied all of the pisted areas, Brèvent, Flegere (linked so can be used together) Grand Montet, La Tour, Vallorcine, Les Houches, leaving Valley Blanche separate (skied this too, with local guide) there's easily enough for a week visit, not ordinarily any need to travel out of valley to another destination.
Go there, let it soak in and enjoy it. Highly regarded for many many good reason.

Nope. Cham gets more snow from different directions. And Courmayeur option for a Southerly. With a free pass Cham is a no brainer. Val D’A is a decent area and more off the beaten track but if you haven’t been to Chamonix go there first
