Chamonix is 1 of the options for next year
Is there a main centre with bars and restaurants or is it spread along the valley with buses everywhere.
Prefer to be within a few minutes of the lifts and upto 10 minutes of the bars/restaurants etc
Age wise Dads late 40's sons ( if they go ) 20's

The town is quite compact. While it does spread up and down the valley a bit, most of it is in a pretty small walkable area.
What's not as compact is the access to the skiing. It seems like you might be thinking of this as a "resort". It's not. It's a town. With skiing. You can't really be somewhere in downtown and be that close to the lifts. Other than the Aguille I guess. But that sure isn't resort skiing. Brevent is kind of walkable from downtown, but up a steep hill. Flegere and Grand Montets are some distance from town. Thankfully, the bus and or train system is quite good. Having a car is even better.
I'd suggest getting a place within walking distance of the pedestrian zone and take the bus or drive to the lifts.

Alternatively, Argentiere has a bit of life in the evening (although nowhere near as much as Chamonix itself) and easy access to the Grands Montets
You'll probably end up spending a bit of time on the busses wherever you stay

@wasley, if it was me (I live there ) I'd be very close to
- Brevent lift station
- Savoy to get to brevent but that needs town snow
- Main train station as that gets you to Flegere and Grands Montets easily, which are the best proper skiing - trains from down valley stop there for 15 mins on way up which is, frankly, useless.
When are you thinking? Budget?

Folie Douce (a hotel as well as a bar/club etc.) is a good blend IMO - short walk to town, and assuming there's enough snow low down, you can use the Savoy drag lift to access the Brevent, or walk to Satsuki to get the bus to Argentiere.

@snowdave, it is quite good fun although the 10x multiple on prosecco prices is a bit  but the singers/dancers are quite fun

Thanks for the great info so far and to answer a few questions
Well have a hire car
staying between end of feb to beginning of march for 4-5 days
Budget - lower end ( probably a Airbnb)
A few more questions
Rough Parking cost at each lift station
Do they have Ski lockers at the lift stations
Dont mind walking , but like to avoid walking in ski boots at all costs

@wasley, currently … parking Flegere and Grands are free … I don’t think there are lockers
Airbnb should get you lots of options

I always give a shout out for Cham Sud. The connections to all the areas is very good. A lot of the Airbnb apartments offer free underground parking.
If coming for a few days, I’d recommend buying just day passes as you can easily get to Courmayeur or St Garvais.

Could you wait till after French hols? Accommodation prices will be lower and lift queues shorter.

@chrise1967, Cham Sud is fine for town access but not near any skiing. The car parking is not assigned and in high weeks can get filled up (and not all spaces fit "modern" cars) ... (it was built in the late 70s)
