Poster: A snowHead

We have an opportunity to be at the base of the alps much earlier this year and thinking of spending a morning in annecy before heading up the mountain.
Has anyone stayed in Annecy in a central hotel (which can take 2 adults / two kids in a room) with secure parking?

I can gladly recommend the hotel we used twice, winter and summer.
Ibis Annecy Centre Vieille Ville
Very central and clean, right by the river and the old city and close to the local mall .
Great breakfast and on site small cosy evening bar right by the reception.
Underground parking right next to the hotel (discounted)
We went for double/twin beds but it appears they also have bigger rooms with double bed plus a sofa.

I mostly stayed here in Anncey. Great spot, a bit of a walk into town but pleasant walk next to the lake. Automated toilets right next to lake (at plage des Marquisats across main road). I think this spot used to be closer to the main road, but has been moved and other parking (parking paygo verano) replaced the Flot bleu area so it is less visible from the main road.

toilets are here so not far

I know it is unusual to mention the toilets, but they were fascinating as they are fully automated and self cleaning after you shut the door. Also there are no people standing by asking for 50 cents for a pee, with a measly ration of toilet paper.

Been many years, but in the late 90s and early 2000s I stayed at what was then a Mercure, right on the old town wall. Seems it's now called the Hotel Icone
So I've no idea what it's like, quality-wise, these days, but its location (and access to it, not to be underestimated in the maze that is Annecy) is superb and there's a car park just next-door but one that was included in the price back then, particularly useful when I was on a motorbike trip with a few friends.
ETA: I meant to say I stayed there quite a few time, perhaps five or six separate occasions.

Le Belvedere is quite nice and on the road up to the Semnoz. It is slightly out of town and has a great view over the lake and a good restaurant. Beware though if walking into Annecy centre the walk home can can steep!

Have also stayed in the Ibis in the centre before and it was pleasant enough.
Both these stays were in summer while cycling.

Geneva leaves me very underwhelmed, an urban sprawl with traffic problems.

@NoMapNoCompass, don't drive? A chacun son gout... it's a pretty nice place to live. and reasonably convenient for alps and airport

it's a dump tbh. They have a river with a few restaurants on it and claim to be the Venice of the North! The old town is pleasant but full of homeless beggars with barking dogs. Apart from that it is busy, heavy traffic, urban sprawl and expensive.
Chambery has nice old town but again, lots of highways all over the place which spoil it and some dodgy areas.

While to us it was a treat. A steady flowing river with some narrower canals nearby, plenty of flowers and good restaurants rather close to the usual tourist traps, the lake is nearby with a green park perfect for running and fast walks.
Some pics from this April (stopped for a couple of days before the EOSB)

Don't do what my son did in April. Get a cheaper Friday flight and hotel in Annecy, spend too long pottering round the town (which they enjoyed), then drive up to resort using the satnav. He got within a few kms of destination but had to succumb to near-hysterical wife and kids telling him that having to stop the car, get out in the snow and move boulders and trees out of the way was not normal. He insists they were small rocks and branches.........

It was a rented Swiss car with snow tyres, but he still struggled with a 19-point turn to head back down again.

like practically all French towns it suffers badly from urban sprawl and bad planning and a congested road system
|
Well yes, but mostly we're not talking about it as a place to live, but a place to visit, even if only in transit. For that I think it's just perfect. Also far enough away from the mountain to get a decent drive done after skiing and enjoy the evening before an early start avoiding the traffic leaving the resorts first thing.
We also have friends whose family are from just down the road from there and it has fond memories for my wife who stayed there as a teenager, so we may be biased, but I don't think it deserves your 'dump' appellation by a long chalk.
