Poster: A snowHead

Warning, daft questions alert.
Looking at car hire options from Salzburg to Soll ion 27th Jan 2024. Do hire cars come with winter tyres and/or chains (are chains needed?) and a motorway pass? Haven't looked at route yet but suspect it will involve Austrian motorway.
Cheers

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Be very careful with checking & photographing car for miniscule scratches, particularly if you have your own car hire damage insurance, since they're clearly running a racket from Szburg.
We & friends got done twice in a few weeks for minor blemishes, some of which we had photographs of on pickup.
They even said "you've got your own insurance so why should you care"
They eventually backed down and apologised for their "mistake"

@geoffers, never happened to me at Salzburg in 30+ rentals so while good advice might be over egging it a bit

@flangesax, @geoffers, Goldcar by any chance? But thanks for the reply.

- no: surprisingly Hertz / Thrifty
Friends had an issue where return agent had typed some details into a tablet without saying anything or providing hard copy, but they dropped by the hire desk to be told there was a charge for damage. They strongly contested this there & then, and got them to back down. (having been told " why do you care as you've got insurance")
Couple of weeks later the same mate & I returned a car with no damage, but a month later the charge had been taken from his card with no prior notification. They claimed minor scuffs on rear bumper where luggage had been loaded, but we had already photographed one of these pre-existing marks, so after some strong correspondence they eventually returned the deposit and apologised for their "mistake"

@geoffers, Drives you mad when crap like that happens.
Incidentally, I researched car hire and now coming up at over £400 for a week. Looking like private transfer is winning this race.

Last year car hire was really expensive at this time of year. It dropped by half about 6 weeks from the date we travelled. Get a refundable option in as a banker if you like and wait.... Good to have a car as you can try Alpbach for the day or head to Kirchberg and ski the Kitzbuhel area on a Superski pass.

We use Avis or Buchbinder at Salzburg, no issues with either of them, come with winter tyres (mandatory in Austria) and the vignette

Things move on apace. Transfer coming out over£100 cheaper then hire so my ski buddies have overruled me and we're doing a transfer.
Will keep the tips in mind for future . Thanks everyone.

Megadrive will suddenly offer cars at about half market rate later this year for a week or so. They come with a motorway pass but I think we paid an extra 20 euros to be allowed to drive through Germany. Everybody was encouraged to check for extra damage before taking the car and we all found some including us. Upgraded us free from fiat Punto to some Audi.

Bus to Salzburg station, multiperson train pass to Kufstein and then free bus to Soll will come in at about €15 per person each way. Assuming you're not planning on skiing the day you arrive and you don't mind dragging your gear about it's a pretty good option.

You know it makes sense.

Hop over to the German border if you have time. Prices can be a lot cheaper.
