Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@toyah807, almstadl on the flying mozart piste? Its situated exactly as you describe near the top of the piste on skiers left. Its at the end of a blue track which cuts off some of the steep top bit

@toyah807, My research today (as I didn't recognise the name) also led me to the Almstadl.

@holidayloverxx, @RedandWhiteFlachau, thanks. Thanks also for all your help and advice along the way. My friends have all loved Flachau but gravity won and we have ended up in Herzerlalm (minus the younger members who are Hofstadl bound). Again

Hi all, after a great couple of days in the area at Haus Susanne last year, my husband and I are back in the Snowspace from today until the 17th Feb. We're staying in St Johann im P so our starting point will normally be Alpendorf.

Was wondering if anyone can recommend an instructor at our end of the area? I've been trying to improve my confidence and have some work to do, especially as conditions have changed over the last week... I could probably come to Altenmarkt on the train as well (no car). It'd be a private for me. Very aware that school hols are looming so good people are probably booked up.

Any help appreciated! Very Happy

Hi all, We're coming to Wagrain first week in March...first trip there in nearly 25 years, so excited, but.....

Aside from the potential transfer delays which are giving me palpitations, I'm also now worrying about the skiing (nothing unusual for me). I quite enjoy a lesson - indeed I did one a couple of weeks ago on a solo trip, but hubby doesn't like to do them, so if I can't persuade him, are there any runs that should be avoided by nervous, but competent skiers - and any lovely, gentle and confidence building runs we should aim for? Cheers in anticipation!

@Ctina, Apart from the peak weeks the transfers are panning out better than expected. Maybe an extra 30 mins as long as there are no accidents. Most of the blues on Alpendorf/Wagrain are pretty easy as they cater for a lot of ski schools. The red from the top of Graffenberg towards Wagrain as far as the G-Link is also easy (perfect for carving).

@ElzP, Try Alex Wardley at https://www.skischule-pfeifhofer.com/de/info-booking/. Can't promise you'd get him as he's busy running schools trips but they specialise in one to one out of Alpendorf.

Brilliant, thanks all! If there are any reds which have really steep sections (i.e. best avoided by those who freak out when the run disappears from view), please shout!

@Ctina, I can't think of any. There are some (a few) from Wagrain across to Alpendorf and back but none where you can't see what's ahead of you if you slow down and pause where there might be a track crossing. The steepest reds are actually (IMHO) on the back of the Flachau mountain (but is actually Wagrain) the Flying Mozart and Rot 8. Both have multiple entry points that are steep and bumpy but also access via blue tracks to easier terrain below.

The trickiest red around the Grafenberg area is when coming back to Wagrain from Alpendorf. Red run 40a from the top of the Sonntagskogelbahn 1 to get to the bottom of the Hachau lift back to the top of the Grafenberg. Its a steep entry but wide. The alternative... i think...would be to pick up blue 40C when coming down red 41 then walking to the bottom of the hachau lift. RedandWhiteFlachau will know if this is reasonable

Evening all. My good lady wife is heading to Bad Gastein on Friday with her school. We have never been before but I presume they are staying in the main town and spending most of their time on the Stubnerkogel area.

How are things up there? Any recommendations for where she skis when she gets a bit of time to ski off herself? They take turns having a night off so where would be a decent place for a drink?

Thank you in advance of any help.

@Ctina, 40a is fine. Traverse across the top and just stay skier's right. You really don't want to try the 40c option unless it's a powder day and you can smash through the trees.

Hello, I'm going to be in Obertauern from Saturday for a week with the family (17-24 Feb). I m the only one enjoying offpiste/splitboarding. If any SH is in the area, I would be really keen to meet up for some off-piste or a ski tour!
About me: still a newbie in splitboarding (about 10-12 day) but a relatively advanced snowboarder who enjoys offpiste!

Hi All! My first post here so apologies if this is not the right section. How are the snow conditions in Ski Amade at the moment? I keep seeing articles saying that this winter is unusually warm and many resorts don't have much snow. Also, which resort would you recomend if the choice was between St Johann (or potentially another village in Ski Amade) or Zell am See? Thank you in advance for any info!

@pogonoforysci, welcome to snowheads . You'll probably get an answer here but there is a separate thread for conditions. You could ask there

@pogonoforysci, Welcome to Snowheads.

Today's conditions.....think mid-April! Plenty of snow on pistes, we just need the temp to drop. Likely to stay above average next week then cooling towards the end of Feb. I heard a rumour today that Filzmoos may close after next week. Not enough snow in the valley and it is South facing in a lot of places.

St Johann a bit bland and you schlep up the hill to Alpendorf to start skiing. Wagrain and Flachau are proper snow villages. Maria Alm probably the prettiest. Gastein and Schlamding larger towns. Zell am Zee, skiing's shite but town has a good night vibe.

@RedandWhiteFlachau I found reasonably priced accomodation in Alpendorf so going up the hill won't be an issue. It just looks that it will be very boring in the evenings. Out of curiosity, what is so bad about skiing in Zell? My friend went there recently and was happy with the experience but he's a type that puts more value on comfortable hotels than the sports activities. To me, Zell seems to have a much smaller skiing area

@pogonoforysci, Zell - Smaller ski area, poor lifts, shorter runs. The two Black pistes are good though.

Hi all - following on from my earlier post. I’m in Grossarl skiing Mon 26th - Thurs 29th Feb. I’m with my non-skiing family and so will be skiing solo.

I’ve booked a Ski Amade pass and have a car so can get about as needed.

Is anyone around for a ski?

Also @RedWhiteFlachau assuming you are still away that week - is there anyone that you’d recommend to guide for a morning off piste? Appreciate you may wish to DM if there is!

@clearvision, Unless we have snow this week, or you're prepared to tour up, the off piste is almost non-existent. Gerhard Sint at the Red White Red Ski School in Alpendorf is pretty good if he's available. There is some great easy touring up from Grossarl on the opposite side of the town to the lifts.

Hi! Looking to ski the last week of March, Do you think conditions will still be ok at that stage or where would you recommend?

Did a day trip to Alpendorf in December and was very impressed with the skiing and the people and have been mad to go back since.

@RedandWhiteFlachau and @HolidayLoverxx just wanted to drop your a quick line to say how much were loving Wagrain! Your advice (above) has been invaluable. I can't believe I'm saying this but red 25 from the top of Sonntagskogel down to the Hachau lift is one of my favourites! And the runs above Alpendorf are fantastic! Not been over to the Flachau side yet, but hope to!

@Ctina, Glad you're enjoying it. We were over "your" side today with friends. Top and bottom of pistes were good but that freeze/thaw line in the middle makes for interesting transitions. Make sure you go to the Krapfenalm. They have added a couple of alcohol flavoured doughnuts to their selection. Go to the back of the menu for details.

Thanks both! We watched the bashers at work on the bottom of 22 last night, so hopefully all the big bumps of the last couple of days that made the run so 'interesting' have been smoothed out!

Daughter is going to wagrain with school on 30th March … weather (acc.to Bergfex) is going to be very warm over the next week (14C on Sunday ?) with rain at lower elevations …

Should we be concerned at this stage (and asking school what plan B is if the conditions really degrade?)

The main worry is pistes back to town will disappear (they already look a little threadbare on webcams) and just makes the week rather hard work …

@sheffskibod, why is it a worry and rather hard work? The gondola will take her to the bottom...much easier than skiing the slush. I'm typing this from that very gondola. I've just looked out of the window, the home runs are fine

@sheffskibod, Who knows what the snow will be like in 3 weeks time? Last year we had a massive dump last week of March and the resort extended the season by a week. I have been able to ski to the valley, Flachau or Wagrain every year for the last 5 years on the last open day of the season. As @holidayloverxx, has said above, there's always a Gondola down.

Back home from a brilliant week in Wagrain and attention is now turing to next year! I know weather is an unknown but generally is the area usually fully open in Jan? Might do a solo trip then and another with hubby in March.
