Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

who knows?

I can't move, I have some meetings to attend in Lyon but no trains for the last 2 weeks and no fuel so car at a standstill (has a full tank but not using wasting it) but it depends where you are and where you want to go. No one skiing is reporting any inconvenience so seems all good on the autoroutes and resorts.

This site has the headline details and dates as they come out:

https://www.cestlagreve.fr

But as @davidof, says the effects vary a lot, for instance Tignes has a few inconsequential lifts closed, next door in Val has none shut at all. Fuel shortages are regional depending on which refinery they are served by. The ferries seem to be running but with delays today. Probably best to ask on a particular resort thread what the issues are closer to the time.

No effects so far in the Haute Savoie. No one at work has any support for the strike, dispite the very socialist leanings of some.

Drove out Tuesday to Wednesday 21st March for Val D’Isere. Absolutely no petrol / diesel issues. Final fill up in Moutiers. Last strike had to queue for 30 mins at a station and was sweating it as so many were shut. French have yet to starting queueing but once the call goes out then all hell will break loose. My tactic was to always keep tank at least 1/3 full.

Poo Eh oh! Was about to book something in one of the high French resorts for either just before or after Easter - but not sure now.
Would be a package/charter, so probably OK in the end, but had enough of flight and coach delays and stress already this year.
Any guess as to how long/when things will carry on for and what they might affect?

The law will be confirmed in about 3 weeks - the constitutional court needs to examine it. So expect things to keep going at least until then.

As I and others have said, the strikes don't seem to be having much impact outside cities at the moment. Trains are severely disrupted.

Snow conditions are probably your biggest worry. Go somewhere above 2000m.

Just been looking at the snow cams at Les Arcs where we are hoping to go next week. Snow looks okish, not brilliant but certainly skiable. Overcast but reasonable visibility. But still worried!
Valmeinier where I often go looks quite good considering the time of year. Anybody know what the condition of the snow is under ski? Certainly fingers crossed over the striking but what else can you do? In 40 years we have only been stopped by strikes, for one day. The lift operators were on strike at Courchevel.

I've had two flights cancelled to Lyon airport for tomorrow (one BA, the other an EJ replacement) since 6 pm last night. Both times required rebooking car hire, airport parking etc. seriously hacked off and lacking in sympathy for people who think they can finance 20 years of retirement + 20 years of education with 30 years of work.
Fingers crossed I don't get another EJ text in the next 24 hours.

Hi all, We are driving down overnight next Friday to Tignes VC. Have planned on going through Belley to fill tank at Carrefore. Would I be safer staying on Autoroute? Or is there anyone with local knowledge to whether they have fuel there? I know it’s a week off and a lot can happen so not rushed for replies. Any advice happily received. Thank you

@snowhound, more like 40 years of work I e. for a graduate, say age 22 to 62. For an 18 y.o. school leaver, 44 years of work. Yes, French retirement age probably needs to increase a bit (like ours) but maybe do it one year at a time.

@Dougie, We're in France now but are sightseeing as much as skiing (!) for a change. Drove from Reims to Mâcon mostly via D routes today and got diesel, no problem. Driving to Samoens in GM tomorrow and will fill up somewhere on route. Will post tomorrow evening about this but didn't notice any closed fuel stations today and passed quite a few. I do have 5l of diesel in a can as a backup. I think you're allowed up to 15l in cans in tunnel.

The French government petrol price website will give you an idea of who has petrol although during the autumn strikes it was often out of date.

I must say I’m getting a bit worried about the whole trip! rolling eyes Accommodation can’t be cancelled so that would all be lost if we didn’t go.

Your fears are almost certainly worse than the reality will be, @Skimum1. Embrace the uncertainty! That web link very useful - thanks @Dougie. I'm driving to Genoa Thursday/Friday then back to the northern Alps Saturday. In a very economical petrol car, but will still need a lot of fuel. Fingers crossed, everybody.

I think they take the information from here : https://www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/

or rather from the same data but present it in a better way. From what I've heard and seen it seems to be accurate. Locally we have some issues but the autoroute service stations are kept supplied. At over 2 euros / liter you'd be mad not to.

When we had the big problems in the autumn the various websites couldn't keep up, so you'd go somewhere with fuel and they'd have run out. There was a lot of panic buying but petrol is more expensive now and that seems to be choking demand a bit.

So yes, if you are driving on holiday I'd say it is okay currently. Trains are currently the biggest transport issue.

Thanks @Dougie for posting your link.

@pam w, I guess with tolls and everything it is eyewateringly dear whatever.

During the autumn problems, which really affected the Grenoble area badly, the autoroute service stations always had supplies.

Yes - not to mention lift passes! Once the decision is made to embark on the long drive (extra long for me this year) my priority becomes swift, safe, progress, as painlessly as possible. Given that most of my driving this next trip will be solo, I am quite looking forward to it! Good to know that petrol on the autoroute will probably be fine.

Here's more detail by area and type of service - inter city, regional or Ile de France

On the above you can then click 'voir mon train' and search by number, itinerary, driver's mother's maiden name etc!

airport? The traffic controllers were on strike on Thursday. The next big strike day in Tuesday however I'm told that there is 30% less capacity at the moment for ATC. Maybe that is why?

@Gored, Difficult to say, there seems to be delays all over the south of France, but an hour late at Grenoble or Chambery is generally good going on a good day due to lack of capacity of Border Guards, baggage handlers etc etc.

The Air Traffic Controllers are going on strike 27-31 Mar, so there will be lots of delays and cancellations to destinations in France and overflying planes as they go round France!

The next general strike will be on Tuesday 28th March.
