Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Most people ski 1-2 weeks per year. It makes sense that they want to maximise the time on snow. I can go out drinking any Fri/sat night the rest of the year. It makes less sense to me that people end up hungover or too tired to enjoy one of the few days each year they get to ski.

@Hurtle, I guess making memories sounds a bit silly as it implies something actively being done, whereas remembering something is (usually) subconscious. However, now that people take so many photos and post about their lives on social media, perhaps "making memories" is a bit more active e.g. taking photos on skiing trips to help me to remember them in future years.

@bezthespaniard, Not sure I understand - what are the memories you want to make - sitting in a bar drinking or out in the the mountains skiing. Or creating false memories more glamorous than the real memories of the day's skiing. You have memories, you don't manufacture them.

Perhaps I have misunderstood this phrase but to me it means either literally "I am trying to get hold of you and drag out from this river" or metaphorically “I want to help you”

I think I've turned full grumpy old man with cold calls. They garble through the who they are calling from so fast I make them stop and spell it. Then I ask so what do you want and put the phone down. Risk is one day it will be a work call which is why I answer in the first place.

On a ski note, the thing I don’t get is a group of about 20 who “All” want to set off at the same time. Not 5 then a few seconds later another 5 but all 20 ski off and invariably come close to crashing into each other.

I don't get people who see a decent lunch on the mountain as a waste of time, yet seem to struggle to cover what I would consider a reasonable amount of ground in a day. I came across this a quite a few times last year in conversation with other slope users, they seemed quite competent but skied in a full day what we had covered before elevenses while being adamant that stops were absolutely minimised as their skiing time was so precious. Some simply could not understand how it was possible to ski from Champoluc to Alagna and back in a day and also have a leisurely 3 course lunch. By observation this is mostly cause by a combination of faffing (hanging around the top of lifts) and constant stopping (not to appreciate the view, but to recuperate and faff some more).

Each to their own and all that, but for many of us there is more to the whole experience than just sliding on skis. It's not that I don't get those who just want to ski hard all day and are happy to minimise any stoppage time, I can understand that (even though I think they are missing a great part of the experience!). It's those who clearly don't ski that hard and express what a waste of time that a decent mountain lunch is that make no sense to me.

As for après - I thoroughly enjoy this aspect too. I don't at all get, however, why it seems to automatically be assumed it must involve over-imbibing to the extent that you miss skiing with a hangover the next day. Perfectly possible to enjoy some great apres without getting into that state.

'reaching out' seems more like 'I'm begging you to help me' without using the begging word.

Oh. I think it means "I'm contacting you", at least that's where I've come across it. I'd expect it to be followed by "because..." and then something about where they got my contact details and what they want to contact me about.

The guy selling stuff door-to-door doesn't use it, because he's not "reaching out", he's just banging on the door.

I thought it was quite a nice metaphor, although not one I'd use. English is good that way.

I usually have a big breakfast, gnaw on snackbars throughout the morning & usually not very hungry for lunch. I am done by mid afternoon, so head off to get a decent table for Apres. Wrap up the Apres early evening, then go for an evening meal & in bed when the clock still ends in PM.
As you say, each to their own.

A few years back a group of us went to VT. The majority of the group went to bed early and got up for the first lift of the day. No evening socialising or alcohol to be seen.

3 of us spent our days on the piste and evenings on the wee wee’ed*. One night we staggered in at 3am.

Overall, the early nighters skied 3 hours more than us in total, over a week.

But they missed 18 hours of evening debauchery and mischief.

I loved every second skiing but some of the evening memories are just as incredible if not more so. Especially the drunken VT pizza at 3am, debating which star was the North Star.

Ski trips are holidays. Most of us get limited weeks per year. And the fun isn’t just the moments on the slopes. It’s all the bits in between with our friends.

As above. A ski trip is so much more than the moments on the snow.

For me, it’s playing Citizens board game and eating cheese with new friends, it’s giving apres salsa lessons to Singapore students, it’s getting lost in Chamonix and making 12 random Australian friends that I’m still in touch with a decade later.

I could go on, but if a ski trip is only about skiing for you, then I feel a tiny bit sorry for all the adventures you are missing out on.

All memories are false memories - as in they are encoded engrams of an inaccurate and largely fabricated mental model, and recall is usually heavily embellished by current local factors, resulting in false reinforcement.

But late nights and alcohol effect different people differently. Maybe the ones that didn't get hammered and stay out till 3am, did that because they knew that it would impact their skiing the next day. Generally the ones that stay out that late, do it knowing that they'll still get out the next day.

I did the 3am nights in VT up till my late 30's and it was great fun - now I'm older I prefer to do have a few beers but to be in bed by 11. I now look back to myself in my 20's and think that, while it was great fun, that maybe we needed the alcohol to aide the fun whereas I don't so much now, 4-5 beers is perfect for me, and we still have a good laugh. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

That said, I do agree that a skiing trip isn't just about the skiing - and the bits I enjoy most are having a beer in the sun in the mountains with friends or family. That's my happy space.
