Poster: A snowHead
|
We have a campervan with a tow ball fitted on the back. At the moment we use a buzz rack ski rack on it, this works quite well but means the skis are outside all the time and can get road grime on them when driving. I would really like to have them in a lockable box, but can’t seem to find anything currently on the market. Does anyone know of one or alternatively has made their own?
Many thanks

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@alove, I don't think any of the readily-available tow bar mounted boxes are large enough for skis.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@alove, no specific experience other than similar in carrying ski on open rack, back of a VW T based van.
But this maybe a route for suitable adaption https://www.lnbtowbars.co.uk/motorhome-products/motorcycle-carriers/ a motorcycle towbar carrier with a suitable ski/roof box fitted to that. The 110kg option on that link looks a sensible start point perhaps.

Thanks, that could be an option, i have seen some motorhomes with roof boxes on something similar although would prefer for it to be vertical as feels less likely to get knocked.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@alove, a couple of things….
You are right to be concerned about having the skis unprotected on the outside. It’s a bad thing having winter salt spray in the bindings; I have even seen very new skis burst-delaminated due to corrosion of the aluminium layer through salt exposure on roof racks.
Secondly, Gored showed nice boxes but obviously they are expensive. Worth it, but expensive. What you are seeking does exist, but it’s hard to find. This is the one which is good, solid, and goes straight onto a tow bar. You then need watertight or breathable bags for the skis, which is an easy fix.
