 Poster: A snowHead

These days there is pretty cool drone footage of the alpine racing.
I assume that drones, for us mere mortals, wouldn't be allowed? I can see why, what with lift cables amongst other issues, but it would be great to have a whole new perspective on the slopes.

I believe a lot of resorts banned them.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@SHAP, a lot of ski areas don't allow drones unless it's for approved professional use, something I'm myself glad of as the last thing I want is a plethora of drones flying above me (possibly piloted by some inexperienced users) with the ever present risk of an accident not to mention the annoying noise (I can do grumpy ). Agreed though that the drone coverage of the World Cup races is excellent.
You mentioned lift cables, here's a clip of one flying into a chairlift! (fortunately the chair didn't have anyone on it): https://www.facebook.com/DronesCrashing/videos/1570423366614131/

@Alastair Pink, that could have been nasty.
Just to be clear, I've no issue with the ban on them, the above video suggests that in the wrong hands, they could be lethal.
Still enjoy good drone footage though...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'd love to film with a drone but I'd hate someone else filming (near) me, due to noise and general distraction.
For unlicensed users there is also the issue that batteries don't do well in the cold, and one dropping on someone's head doesn't bear thinking about, particularly if they are near a steep drop or another person at the time. Hmm - a surreptitious case for helmets?
If for yourself you could try a 360deg GoPro or similar, people use them here. Also on sticks pointing up out of backpacks.

True, but there wasn't any for a while, right after a drone fell out of the sky and nearly hit Marcel Hirsher! Curious how they got back to thinking they could do it safely.

They use them quite extensively in the Natural Selection series. Always chasing and they always loop back away from the competitive area so no chance one will overfly someone. They're all much smaller than the big 6 rotor one that nearly took out Hirsher too.

Drones have lots of technology like ‘Follow Me’, ‘return home’ & ‘auto land’ - however they are not intelligent enough to recognise & avoid obstacles.

Watching the World Cup coverage recently on Eurosport it's noticeable how the audio picks up the high pitched whirring noise from the drones as they follow the racers down the course.

they do a pretty good job at that these days but they are not great at following purely using their cameras, especially fast moving skiers.
Looking at some of the 360 footage it currently looks like a better bet than using a drone.
