Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Are kneebings gripwalk compatible?

I have 7.5yr old kneebindings will they be compatible with gripwalk boots? As the boots that fit me best are gripwalk ones. Didn't really want to change the bindings quite yet!

I suspect that is a Spyderjon question. Current models are - and if lucky, older ones might be adaptable.

He had a PM (as he also sold.me the bindings originally Smile)

However covering all basis. The instruction manual puts the choice onto the ski tech!

With combination of the above "probably yes" from instructions and this page

Bought the boots. Good news in they lock in and release well, albeit with a bit more force than my old ones which did cause me a moments panic when didn't go in on first try.

@SHAP, Lange LX 85HV

My previous boots were also Langes. But best part of 10yrs use had worn down the linings and the wear was quite noticeable on the souls. Snowtrax had given me some insoles previously to lift my foot a bit in them which extended there life but was noticing the movement within the boots again in December

@NickyJ, There's three criteria required for a GW sole to work in an alpine binding which ALL need to be met:

1. The smooth rectangular pad recessed in to the boot sole has to sitting on the toe binding AFD
2. No other part of the boot sole (ie the rubbery part) is fouling on the binding
3. The toe binding/boot interfaces pass the half mm feeler gauge/business card test. As the Kneebinding has a manual toe height adjustment you might need to raise the toe up

Pass all three tests and you're good to go - all assuming of course that your binding length/forward pressure is correctly set as well.

There's actually a good number of older 'alpine sole only' bindings that'll pass all three of the above tests but it's very binding make/model specific and it depends which make/model of boot is being used as there's some tolerance in the GW sole specification standards. But there's waaay more that fail one or more of the three tests so most of the binding manufacturers have just said "no" to the use of older bindings with GW soles to save any confusion and to remove them from any liability etc .

Failing no.2 is usually the issue, especially with rail bindings as the rubbery part of the sole often snags the rail in front of the binding. But sometimes all it takes is a quick Dremel job to either take a bit of rubber sole off or even a bit of the plastic off the binding (assuming non structural) to provide the necessary clearance etc. This is the manual you pictured puts the choice on to the ski tech - but that's assuming the tech actually knows this stuff!

Give me a call (a WhatsApp video call is best so I can see the set-up) if you have any concerns checking your boot/binding combo and I'll talk you through it.

Kneebindings made from 2017 to current have a dual GW/alpine AFD but they also offer the new AFD as a replacement part that can be retrofitted to older bindings - although it's not detailed on their website rolling eyes
