Poster: A snowHead
|
I completely tore my ACL in Feb 2019 and subsequently had surgery in July 2019. The rehab process was long and I only began to attempt skiing again on an indoor slope in Feb 2022. I have noticed a pain close to the incision sites (obviously now scar tissue) in cold weather. This was considerably worse when skiing and I only managed about 20 minutes before I was forced to stop.
Is this a common issue after ACL surgery? Any tips for how to prevent/ reduce this? I’m keen to book my first trip back to the slopes but I’m reluctant if the pain is going to prevent me from making the most of the week.

@rachd_22, try a neoprene knee sleeve to keep your knee warm?

@rachd_22, wĥats your other normal exercise activities and how does that feel? How much can you leg press individually if you do them? I have been trying to get to 1.5times my actual weight to ensure the muscles can do a lot of the work.
I was even longer before trying skiing again due finding out I was pregnant anout 6months post op.

+1 to this. I used something on my knee for hockey matches and skiing. Not for hockey training.... which led to me damaging further that one evening towards end of season thay decided to just have a game <sigh>

+2. Although I don't have your injury, I swear by these for warmth and proprioception.

@rachd_22, doesn’t sound normal to me. I get some discomfort when it’s cold sitting on a chairlift with legs hanging but not when skiing. Release the pain by extending legs (like a leg extension exercise). I would go back and see your surgeon. I got some scar tissue removed 9 months after op which helped.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll look into this- I wasn’t aware that this was something that may be necessary.

Good idea, I’ll give this a go. I used one for months during physio but didn’t even think about using this when skiing.

I mostly swim and cycle (can cycle up to 30 miles with no pain) and can swim all strokes. Obviously aware that both these are low impact so that may have something to do with it.
I used an ACL specialist physio and during strength testing was getting very close to the non operated leg in terms of strength. I was nowhere near 1.5x body weight though so maybe I need to do more strength work.

It is very easy to end up with all your weight through 1 leg while skiing, add in momentum, and the force through leg can end up being greater than just your body weight. I found I would favour me "good leg" during every day activities, hence switched to the gym leg press doing each leg individually to ensure I am properly using it

While my old injury isn't ACL I can confirm lots of ongoing knee specific training on both legs means my knees are equally sore rather than just the one! Old age eh?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I had an ACL replacement many years ago and they used a electrocautery for the incision I also experienced pain around the scar tissue when in cold weather. I used to use a standard moisturiser which helped, in time this pain disappeared hope this helps and keep exercising the quads to protect the knee will help.

+1 for wot @BobinCH said. I don't get cold weather pain, or any pain other than occasional discomfort on a chair lift same as Bob.
