Poster: A snowHead
|
According to rro (Oberwallis local radio news) Saas-Fee has begun building a new 6-seater chairlift in the Morenia/Felskinn region. The lift should be completed before the winter season....
The top of the lift is somewhere in the region of the top of the Felskin cablecar, while the bottom is at the bottom of a red run that threads its way down the mountain and currently peters out into a track or a couple of short blacks and should provide a useful addition, but without creating any new runs.
The link is here www.rro.ch/ but the address seems to stay the same despite the page.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

The proposed location is marked on this year's piste map. Essentially it will cut out the need for the two T-bars that run parallel to each other from Moreina. It looks like (from the pictures) that it will be a covered chair...although the one that they have just replaced at Langfluh isn't.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Elizabeth B, they replaced the old chair up to Langfluh - rather than the 'Mother of all t-bars' which runs up the glacier? The problem I remember at Saas Fee was the queue for the Felskinn cable car, which was partly because they tended to open late because of avalanche clearing...

Hoppo, the problem with the 'Mother of all t-bars' apart from it being b***y cold when in the shade is that all of it is over the glacier, which is reputedly over 50m thick, and there'd be nowhere to anchor the pylons onto, I recall in January that if you looked to your right at times going up on the non-piste side you were staring into huge great crevasses only feet from the track.
They are also meant to be building a t-bar and chair over near the Britannia hut, outside of the current ski area, to the left of the top of the Felskin, but you would still need to access it from a t-bar near Moreina I think, be interesting to see if they do it this year. Saas Fee could do with a bit more adding to it's ski area.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I recall someone quoting the figures as to how much the glacier moves...unfortunately I can't remember the details.
I think they said that they have to play around with the support pylons around every 6 weeks, due to the movement. Because of this, they can't build chairs (which have to sustain far more weight). I presume that the new Moreina chair skirts round the glaciated area.
With regard to the Britannia area, I think that's planned for 2007/08.

stevew, I learnt some new and interesting combinations of swear words from Mrs H on that t-bar
One of the Swiss resorts has a v. cunning chairlift system with 'walking' plyons on a glacier...

Hoppo, Zermatt recently put a chairlift onto the glacier - is that the one you are thinking of - Furggsattel ?
It has adjustable legs and big load spreading steel pads on the ice. Each pylon has a large panel at the top woth left/right markings (from memory) so they can survey the position from lower down and keep the cable aligned.

Hoppo, the never-ending T-bar is still there. There used to be a 2-man chair below the T-bar and this has been replaced by a 4-man chair.
Elizabeth B, I don't think the new chair lift will replace the two T-bars from Morenia - they serve somewhat different pistes. The new lift will be further over to the right as you look up from Morenia and will primarily serve a run that is very little used at present.

Derek Jackson, sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it would replace the T-bars...more along the lines of "steal many of their customers".
I've been trying to dig out my piste map to see exactly where it runs.....but I can't locate at it the moment.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Elizabeth B, try here www.saas-fee.ch/en/maps.cfm it runs from the bottom of Piste 6, where you can continue down either the track or one of the two blacks, up to around the top of the Felskinn cable car. I'm not exactly sure where the top will be. Pistes 5a and 6 are little used at present and will now probably become very popular.

Derek Jackson, thanks. It looks like it will improve usage on them...but will also allow access to the blue "Egginer", which is currently served by the T-bar.

The long fee Chatz Tbar is relatively new. before it was built you had to pay a supplement to get a tow behind a Kassboher, or walk.
