Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, looking for suggestions for accommodation next year in Val Cenis. For once Scottish half term doesn't clash with any of the French Holidays so France is an affordable option for once in Feb. I am liking the look of Val Cenis and wondering what you'd suggest accommodation wise? Ideally Half Board hotel OR an apartment complex that offers Half board option. Pool would be great too. Have been looking at Les Balcons but having spent Easter last year in their one in Val Thorens, not so keen. TIA.

We stayed in chalets de flambeau which is high end self catering at the foot of the slopes. It was a short walk from the village. I would also suggest looking at Les balcons platinum and Hotel St Charles which are the most recently built properties and look good. All of these are offered by Peak Retreats who I’d recommend if you are looking for a tour operator.
I think there is quite a variation in Les balcons residences depending on when they were built. Eg we stayed in hotel Alparena in La rosiere which is part of Les balcons and was excellent but I suspect the Les balcons residences in Val thorens are older and more basic.

@pam w, yes, Scottish half term for us is the first week which works rather well. Thanks for all the other suggestions, good point about Les Balcons, I'll research them a bit more as there are three options in Val Cenis @SHAP, let me know how you get on at De Flambeau, could be an option but I'd rather not have to self cater, but if price was right we could eat out a lot! THANKS ALL

To eat out @trmacc, i'd see as decent balance in this location. With pass, accommodation and food cost there all a good balance in comparison to some of the more famous ski areas, then overall price with all elements accounted for will give reasonable scope.
One of the attractions being that there's particularly good choice of food both on mountain and for the evening to make a very good variety in eating very good local focused food.
We've, family of four, been there only on this basis (self catering, eating anywhere interesting) and find it particularly attractive, often with a walk out to evening restaurants etc.

@trmacc, it'll just be me and my 2 teens. I can't imagine we will do much self catering - lots of meals out is the plan. It's a holiday after all...

@trmacc, I'll let you know how it goes. Mainly chose the accommodation as it looks/seems much more modern than many other places I've skied.

@SHAP, It is a long time since we stayed at Chalets de Flambeau so there may be others on here with more up to date information. We had a two bed south facing apartment looking up to the slopes - I think most if not all apartments face this way so should you come back for lunch there is a good chance of sun on the balcony. The complex has a decent pool, two jacuzzis, sauna and steam room. Like many french residences I found the pool and jacuzzi slightly on the cool side. There is an onsite spa for treatments etc. The apartment was very comfortably furnished and almost new when we stayed there.
The residence is well located for skiing being next to a ski school meeting point and lift. It is less convenient for the village in the evenings but this did not bother us as by the time we'd skied all day and been to the pool etc we were happy to relax in the apartment. We borrowed a fondue set from the residence one day. If I remember correctly there were some meals you could order from a local traiteur through reception. We ate out once in the evening at a nice restaurant in Lanselvillard called L'Arcelle. there was a good choice of restaurants on the mountain. I remember particularly liking Le Relais du Col.
