Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Soll (Hohe Salve) - Lift OVERcapacity?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Currently in Ellmau (snow is great), and skied over to Soll today and took a gondola up the Hohe Salve. There seems to be one red (split briefly) and two blacks off the top. I took a red - and at 10am on a day where the snow is firm and cold - it had already bumped up considerably. It’s also quite narrow. Can’t imagine what that’s like later on on a soft snow day? The blacks from a distance looked in good nick - the reds are better in SkiWelt as blues seem to be favoured…

Anyway. The problem? They have TWO 8 person gondolas dropping people on to a very small summit; the people in the gondola with me didn’t realise where they were going.

Surely that’s too many people; we complain about not enough capacity but too much can be dangerous?

Last time I was in Soll the Hohe Salve summit was served by ONE chair. And the chair was SINGLE… ok that’s a bit extreme the other way, and Ski Welt aren’t going to close a lift because I think it’s a bit dangerous, but…not sure they properly thought that through

Interesting mix of lifts in Ski Welt. Some really modern ones (but a couple of really old ones over in Soll, and quite a number of slow chairs; I guess I’ve bern spoilt with Saalbach and Ischgl and Obergurgl and to a lesser extent Kitzbuhel). Maybe that IS the way to control downhill numbers…

Staying at Tirol Lodge. A couple of people in other threads have asked what it’s like. I can do a post on it; it’s location is superb for Austria though isn’t QUITE the ski in, ski out of claims to be. More later.

Yes please I fancy that for next year. Did you go TO or DIY?

DIY. The taxi driver from the airport was taking me round the back of the mountain via Kitz. Something to do with wrong setting in satnav. Until I said “oi!” Comes to something when I know the Tirol better than someone who must spend a good proportion of his life driving here. Ok, will work up a review.

Must have been a while ago when you went last as when I used to go to Scheffau 2 or 3 times a year 20 years ago they already had the bubble up to the Hohe Salve as I recall

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Oh yes. Back in the 80s!

One of the bubbles looks oldish (the one from Hochsoll), but there’s another from Brixen side..

Just looked at ski resort info site. Hohe Salve gondola built 2000. Salvebahn 2 - the other one - 2008

Ah yes that's going back! My first trip was in '88 but I didn't get off the bunny slopes.

Not sure why this might be "dangerous"? Yes the only ways off the Hohe Salve are pretty steep, the black down on the Brixen side catches the sun too. If you find it too much easy enough to get the gondola back down (people come up for the "views" and lunch). On a sunny day it is a pleasant enough spot to sit on the terrace.

The number of people who might take a run. And you can’t take the gondola when you’ve started a run… I can imagine that red is carnage at times. True of course some just go for the views. Anyway they’ve had the two lifts for 15 years and they are the experts

Catching sun is ok - to a point - like today. Cold enough for the snow just to lose its hardness but that was it. Hoping it’ll be a little quieter tomorrow; good weather and good snow must have drawn a lot of day trippers. Queues weren’t that bad still.
