Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all
I have an upcoming trip to Val Thorens UCPA for the advanced off piste ski course (if you'll be here, see my earlier post!))
As I am coming from New Zealand, bringing my boots is obviously going to be quite a hassle, plus I am extending my trip with some further travel around France as well.
However I do have boots that I really like, so I am wondering what your experience with the UCPA boots are like, and if I take the time to find a pair that fit, all will be well. I would describe my ski style as reasonably aggressive, but my boots only have a flex of 115.
Let me know what you think!
Cheers

I haven't been to Val Thorens as such but my experience with UCPA equipment is that it is decent quality, never had issues with fitting. You will probably end up though with a softer more flexible boot as I doubt they have specific boots with reduced flex.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Their kit has always been a bit cheap and cheerful, but that's what I expect for the price.
Last year I noticed the boots all seemed a bit past it and there was very little choice. That's the first time I had been disappointed with their hire kit and I hope it was just a hangover from Covid.
There is of course a chance that the issue was specific to that centre and that other UCPAs could have been better. That wasn't in Val Thorens.

@kc100, bring your own properly fitted boots, they might be tired and sloppy - you do not want that.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

And do tell us about your trip - we don't get many first hand reports of UCPAs.

Several time UCPA user (although not an off piste fan!)
I always take my own boots, along with I would say the vast majority of UCPA users. I was in val thorens last year, the boots they have look ok albeit well used. Staff in the ski/boot place there are always very helpful and knowledgeable, so would I’m sure do their best to help find a good fit from what’s available, but I’d advise bringing your own.
Enjoy - val thorens is my favourite ucpa so far and from talking to others who use them is generally seen as one of the best

Isn’t boot fit pretty critical?
I would think an “Advanced” course of any sort, never mind off-piste, would demand a well fitted boot to be successful.
So, it isn’t so much the flex of the boots available in the center, but the selection of fits to different shape of feet that will be the more important thing to consider.
