Apologies 2nd thread of the day. Trying to salvage my ski boot disaster.
I want to courier my old boots out to Val d’isere. I’ve looked on a compare website and it says TNT can pick up tomorrow and get to me by Wednesday for about £60. I can then get 2 or maybe 2.5 days of skiing in.
Has anyone done this? Reliable? I can only find threads on here pre Brexit. Thank you !

I've no idea but it's a very interesting question. The idea of getting baggage courier'd out and back and flying with a rolled up copy of the Financial Times is attractive. My sister once had a friend who sent the chauffeur out to Kitzbuhel with all the stuff in advance of their holiday (chauffeur then spent a few days skiing) and the reverse happened at the end of their stay.

I’d be wary of this post Brexit. I’ve heard horror stories eg someone I know tried to send his bike back to the UK from Belgium so he could ride it over the Christmas period. 3 weeks later, still stuck in customs!
That said, in your situation maybe it’s worth the risk? If they don’t arrive you’re in no worse a situation than you are now
I’d love it if someone can suggest a reliable service because, like pamw, I’d pay a moderate to high amount of cash to have all my kit picked up from home and waiting for my arrival

@Snowysarah, I don’t think they will get to you in time. Everything from the uk that has to clear customs takes about a week min. The only stuff that gets through faster is pre-cleared for big companies like M&S. Then it’s about 3 days.

Actually you might never get your old boots back so that could be worse

@Snowysarah, suggest you ask @SteveAngus for a local boot fitter recommendation and rent for a couple of days if necessary

No way I would try this. Shipping from the UK to EU has been majorly screwed up by Brexit, and then post/couriers in the UK have been even worse than usual in the past month. Most probably your boots will get stuck in customs, as @Scarlet, says, and you'll be lucky to see them again.

also be aware of the delivery 'failing' and then can be collected from the nearest town, down in the valley!

@mgrolf, yep, there’s definitely been a post-Brexit increase in parcel disappearances

My partner had to get serum eye drops sent to Morzine last year as she had left at home on our last ski trip. We used next day delivery with ups. Paid a good amount of money. Well they never got delivered. Stuck in customs and we’re sent back to us four weeks later.

Sent some old bangers by royal mail just before the computer problems, cost about £50 then customs wanted 91 euro to release them!! The skis weren't even worth that!

 You know it makes sense.

@Snowysarah, Agree with all the above, not a realistic option post Brexit.

As an aside, it's interesting what my late mother used to say about her childhood in the early 20th Century (she was born in 1910). She said that it was only the poorest people who actually carried their luggage on the train or bus. Because most people could afford to have their luggage picked-up at home ahead of their journey, and delivered by train and Post Office to their destination, so it would be there when they arrived. Doing this internationally was more expensive but the same principle applied of it being the easiest way to shift luggage.
I know that there's a facility in Switzerland for you to have your flight luggage forwarded to a Swiss post office for collection. I've seen people in our village in the supermarket PO section collecting luggage.

I have a distant memory of checking in my bags at the local railway station the day before or something with Swiss Air and them arriving on the carousel as normal at Heathrow. Certainly made it easier when travelling with young kids only having to bother with your hand luggage.

On the Orient Express you check the bags in at Victoria and they are transferred by road to your hotel ready for your arrival

I have a fairly recent memory of doing something similar. Checked in my main luggage at Arosa railway station on the last morning, went off skiing for the day, changed and caught the train and picked up bags at Zurich airport. All very Swiss efficient and just had skis, boots and a small rucksack to carry on the train.

Air travel has become much more of a hoi-polloi scrum since the days when the very few people who could afford to travel had their heavy trunks delivered by carriage to their hotel prior to their arrival. To judge from this thread there is a market for a private luggage transfer service - a business opportunity which has been scuppered (like so much else) by Brexit. I'd pay extra for that much more readily than paying for being plied with more food than I want, constantly refurbished bathroom suites or luxurious unwellness centres. Sending an impoverished member of the family down in a car with all the skis and luggage and paying for their accommodation and lift pass for the week might be the nearest we can get? They could clear the snow from the apartment paths too, and take on a bit of child care.
