Poster: A snowHead
|
Since we last went skiing my 11 year old has now started wearing glasses. Unfortunately not wearing them isn’t an option due to the prescription strength so I’m hoping other parents of glasses wearing children can share whether they’ve found goggles or helmets with integral visors to be the best option.
As her prescription seems to change every 6 months I’d rather not buy prescription goggles (I haven’t even bought myself prescription goggles!) and she isn’t keen on trying contact lenses but I’m not sure whether it’s possible to get child size goggles that will fit over her glasses and with her helmet.
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly received. Thank you.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Rather than rely on experience that may or may not be applicable are there any shops you can get to to try some with the glasses and child in question?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@ACS,
Have a look here https://www.vision3k.com
I have Scott OTG goggles in a youth size (small head for an adult!) and they are fine. Must say, though, I would look at a visor helmet if I ever changed my lid

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thank you, sounds like helmet with visor might be the way to go. Frustratingly I don’t think there are any local ski equipment shops where she could try on both goggles and helmets (we’re in Oxfordshire).

Except on very nasty days I guess she could wear just specs - she will presumably need a pair of prescription sunnies anyway.

@ACS, Try the Kid-550 helmet from Decathlon (link). There is a branch in Oxford, or order online with free returns.

@ACS, Ski Bartlett may not be far from you? They have both formats.

My son has had a fairly strong prescription since he was a child and we got him prescription sunglasses (he had prescription goggles for football) which worked fine, and - of course - not only for skiing.

@ACS, mini_mg wears glasses and has had a variety of goggles - most of them not specifically marketed as OTG. At one point we resorted to modifying an existing pair of goggles by cutting out channels in the foam for the side arms of the glasses. She's now an adult, but with a small head, and finds that Smith I/O fit nicely over her glasses.
But a lot of it depends on the glasses and if your daughter changes glasses frames every 6 months then what works now, may not work for her next glasses. On this basis I'd be thinking about a visor helmet if you can find one that fits.

Visor helmet, every time, so much better than goggles over glasses. The linked decathlon one is cracking value, probably as cheaper than a pair of decent goggles, buy a spare visor for it whilst your at it and they are still in stock and cheap as kids are likely to scratch a visor / goggle lenses over time. Its a no brianer.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Just use a pair of nail scissors or a sharp knife to cut a small channel in the foam where the arm of your glasses run.
Result is a perfectly comfortable OTG style goggle with any goggle and the added advantage of a small amount of extra airflow which is just the right amount to mean that they never fog up, but on the other hand don't get cold.
Believe me, it really works.

Thank you all for your suggestions, I’ll check whether her current goggles will fit over her glasses and then if so look at modifying the foam to fit the arm in. If not, I’ll look at visor helmets in decathlon for her.
