Great idea. I'm not really in favour of full smoking bans generally but having designated smoking areas at the top of lifts will allow those who need a cigarette to do so without bothering anyone else and stop the awful littering being spread around the mountain.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Hopefully the smoking zone at the top of the lifts is away from the offloading area, so you don't alight in a fugg of fumes.
I'm glad they've done this, I can't wait to breath in the clean mountain air there in Jan, and it won't be spoiled by the second hand smoke from gauloises.

Great idea, but it will be ignored by most French and there will be little enforcement, especially on the lifts.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Although I hate being close to someone smoking and happy to see no smoking in bars, there is too much ban this, ban that, these days. There are already plenty of people who would ban skiing, fortunately still a small minority but how long till someone wants to ban one of your own life pleasures??

The smoking in bars ban wasn't ignored - though lots thought it would be.

@pam w, Yes, it quite surprised me as well, but the fact that they made it an offense for the bar/restaurant owner if anyone smoked on the premises possibly had a significant part to play in this.
As for the LG ban, TBH I don't see that many people smoking on the snow anyway, although the report suggests that quite a few are doing so and throwing their butts out onto the snow.
As a sometime smoker myself I've never really understood why anyone would find it so difficult just to pinch the cigarette out and put the butt in a pocket to take home.
So yeah, I think it's a positive thing if it stops the littering and pollution caused by those morons who persist in treating the great outdoors like a public dustbin.

I can’t remember which French resort, but they were giving out little button down insulated pouch (just a few inches square), into which one could extinguish and store cigarettes. It had a little sleeve to keep a zippo and fit nicely into my leg pocket. Absolutely perfect.
The only problem I had was finding some alone time on a chairlift.

This was quite common for a while, although according to the article it made little difference to the butt problem. I guess people who would use them wouldn't be those who threw their butts onto the snow anyway.

Still available: Pocket Ashtray, on Amazon.
Excellent bit of kit.
Yes, you need to change attitudes first, but there will always be a few rejectors.
