Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ulrich Inderbinen, who died yesterday at Zermatt aged 103, was almost certainly the oldest active mountain guide in the world.
Ski guiding till 95, he continued mountain guiding in summer until he was 97. Then, after taking 10 minutes longer than he had set himself for the descent of the 4,164 m Breithorn, he decided the moment had come to hang up his ice-axe.

This will be a source of great sadness in Zermatt. Their website carries a very brief
announcement and photo
today. Here's a
nice photo
of him.
I have in front of me the biography of Ulrich Inderbinen by Heidi Lanz and Liliane De Meester which is subtitled "As old as the century", because he was born in 1900 and his 100th birthday coincided with the end of the 20th century.
It's a great book, if you like Zermatt and want to know how the place evolved as a resort, with lots of old photos of the village. ISBN 3-907816-50-1.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

He must have been quite an amazing guy to meet. Quite humbling really.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Every cragg and line in the photo of the gentleman's face seem to speak of what I am sure is a fascinating story of a what must have been a remarkable life. As Chris said "quite humbling".
