Poster: A snowHead
|
Looks like the season is going to really get going this weekend and next week with fresh snow, arctic temps and more resorts opening. From a few early season sortie’s I’m amazed by the number of people out ski touring on light gear, and we’ll probably soon have enough of a base to get the Freeride skis out. So what have you got in your quiver for the season ahead? Whats your go to setup? What’s new? What are you moving on? What pearls of wisdom have you got for the rest of us?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I don't know about "Perfect" - but I have some Piste Skis and some AM skis @ 92 underfoot.
If I lived in the mountains, I'd have something wider again - probably in the 115-120 region.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm piste only, just bought some new Dobermann Spitfire 80 RB in 180. I've skied a few Dobes over the years and loved them. Took a punt, good price but I've never skied this particular model. I'm confident though these could see me out.
The Nordica marketing team meeting had a laugh with the name
' The ski? The ski, it's like a Dobermann and a Spitfire, no no! It's like a Dobermann flying a Spitfire! We call them Dobermann Spitfire. '

I'm happy with my two ski quiver: a piste-leaning all mtn (Volkl Mantra) and some fat guys (Fisher Ranger). When I had a bigger quiver I spent too much time thinking/worrying/knowing I was on the wrong ski. With these two even I can usually get it right.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've just put an intermediate 94mm ski in my quiver. Should guarantee either boilerplate or 3ft dumps.

Stoekli Works Cup GS, Head wcr i-something race slalom, my old, old, old Salomon Pocket Rockets with Telemark bindings and my fat Salomon Rocker2 for powder.
The last two are definitely overdue for replacement; I'll perhaps try some with NTN bindings before deciding if my knees are too shot to get back into Telemark - they are supposed to make it easier, but I don't know...
One of the Rocker2s has lost its top sheet but is still skiing well, so I'm minded to stick with them for a bit yet. Or should I follow recent trends for narrower skis (these are 122 underfoot)?
Apart from that there's a selection of other stuff in the garage that I occasionally wheel out for a lesson if conditions are poor.
Oh, I nearly forgot my 1080 Foils with the Fritschis and skins, not done any touring for five or six years, not sure I'm likely to in the near future, but you never know, so I'll hang on to them too.

Looks like someone near Romsley has been making space in their quiver today: Skip skis

One ski for me. Blizzard Rustler 9 with Shift bindings. I’m a lightweight at only 72kg so the 92mm waist and rocker offer plenty of float in fresh. I only skin short distances so the weight is not an issue. They lay down a nice carve too.

Touring:
Jones solution 169w mounted with Spark dyno dh bindings, phantom tech toes and phantom slipper boots.
Nitro slash 162w mounted with spark surge bindings and brackets
I get to ski and snowboard on those setups
Not touring:
Korua pencil 164
Jones Hovercraft 160
Rossi XV 168w
Jones frontier 164w
All mounted with various frankenbindings
Probably don’t need to make any changes. The korua is newish and going to Japan in February. The rest of my boards are munted but go fine.

Volkl V Werks Mantras with Shift bindings (cos they work with my touring boots) for resort skiing.
Volkl Rise Above with Alpinist bindings for touring.
Volkl fan boy, sorry.

No need for apologies. Your recommendation led me to the Rise Aboves and I immediately got on with them. Ski beautifully for such a light ski. Mounted with an ATK Crest 8 binding - clicking in is a dream!
Also refreshed the Freeride side of the house with the DPS Pagoda Lotus 117. Mounted with a Marker Griffon. Thought about trying the Look Pivot but the extra weight put me off. Interested if anyone else has experience of both these bindings?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Not going to convince anyone to go narrower but the best thing I did to my touring set up was centre mounting my bindings.
Far more natural movement and kick turns are a doddle

Doesn’t send you over the handlebars in variable pow?

You know it makes sense.

Can do
Just need to work out the balance point
Makes steering/pivoting so much easier and smoother
