Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

French unions plan to create Christmas misery

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Following a long weekend of industrial inaction French unions have called a general strike for Wednesday with disruption, particularly to train services, scheduled to continue over the Christmas holiday period. If you are traveling by train to the Alps check your train hasn't been cancelled.

@davidof, thankfully everyone here is on strike as well so no-one can travel to France to be disrupted there.

Well, folk here won't be able to get to Gare du Nord or Moutiers anyway as no trains will be running on this side of the Channel. Nevermind the fact that their tickets won't ever get to them due to the postal strikes. And god forbid, someone needs a hernia operation or an ACL reconstruction before they hit the snow ...
And if by some miracle you make it to France - no skiing or boarding until at least 1PM (if the lifts ever get going) and a cold charcuterie lunch on a picnic table in a blizzard as restaurants won't be allowed to open.
This is going to be a terrible season. I'm off to walk the dog.

Eurostar vs Eurotunnel….

I started to panic a little a few days ago when the news was released about strikes within the security team of Eurostar.

After calling Eurotunnel, they calmly explained the strikes were not effecting them - just Eurostar, from London / Ashford.

Anyone driving themselves or on a coach etc on ‘Le Tunnel’ pre Xmas ( we travel on 24th Dec ) should be fine. In fact if there are less trains leaving London there should be less chance of congestion entering the tunnel in Folkestone. As all the trains are using the same track.

Now - this clearly can change at a moments notice, but I believe there has to be a minimum of 2 weeks notice of industrial action ( I’m no lawyer, so this period may be total rubbish ) so Xmas travel looks like it may be smooth if your leaving from Folkestone on EUROTUNNEL. Eh oh!

The positive thing about the Tunnel is the electricity comes from the UK - so won't be affected by the French blackouts.

Unions are warning that they will block France this winter. The government fears a movement similar to the "Gilets Jaunes" or the mega strikes of the 1990s. There are a number of issues around working conditions but the principal complaint is increasing the pension age.

Today trains are on strike with only about a third of TGVs running to the Alps. The rail unions are well organized with different groups going on strike at different times: signalmen, maintenance, controllers, drivers but the effect is the same with the company unable to run many services but the unions can prolong the action almost indefinitely.

Private sector workers are more concerned with their monthly pay packet than retirement so it may be hard for Unions to mobilize these workers.

The French government is currently ruling by Presidential decree as it doesn't command a majority in the senate which makes it even less popular.

At 7am today UK was importing 7% of its power. ( http://www.mygridgb.co.uk/dashboard/) .

From the FT:
https://www.ft.com/content/97dd8bf7-3c32-45b6-8d5f-9e191e6d0532

“You can have a situation in which France is exporting to Britain but importing from all other countries. We can have a position as a net importer but still be an exporter to the UK at moments when [it] is running into difficulties,”

The point of ingress into the National Grid is the Sellindge converter station ( actually its in Aldington, and you can see it very well from the M20). Given that this is only 6 miles from the Tunnel, then I suspect that the Tunnel might use some of this.

Maybe so but the French govt. gave out the information that people wouldn't be stuck in the tunnel as it runs on English electricity. Where that electricity comes from the govt. didn't say.

We'll be having blackouts in the UK too. The government are just too weak to let us know yet.

For which, for many fonctionnaires, is a personal problem - but for which, at national economy level, there are very strong arguments. Unfortunately, equally strong unions.
