Poster: A snowHead
|
As the French tend to 'do' Christmas on the Eve (24th) rather than on the Day (25th and I want to ski during the daylight hours anyway), are there any suggestions for restaurants in Montgenevre for Christmas Eve? We will be two families with 4 adults and 4 teenagers (11-15 years old). I will check with the accommodation contact there, but just checking if anyone has any good recommendations. Thanks!

@Tradstyle, if you can, get yourself over to Claviere, we had a very nice lunch in one of our favourites there yesterday, in fact, we were spoilt for choice as two others that we like were also open.
Apart from the fact that the hospitality is way better, they're also way cheaper.
Hotel Pian Del Sole / Mi Chi Restaurant +39 0122 860049 and then an amusing walk back.....

@Weathercam, watching your snow forecasts! Thank you! Will have a look at Claviere. Why was it an amusing walk back? Is it far if I drag kids with me? Should I drink wine before walking back?
The other ones I have heard of are Le Transalpine and Le Refuge in Montgenevre.

I don't think you could easily walk to Claviere for an evening meal. You would need to drive or take a taxi. My favourite restaurant in Montgenevre is les Terraces at the top of the chalvet gondola...I would recommend booking that for Christmas day lunch (or another day as there are only two mountain restaurants in Montgenevre so they get booked up).
Whilst I love Montgenevre as a base for a family ski holiday I have always found it slightly disappointing when we have been out for evening meals. Restaurant Isabel was nice when we last went there three years ago but it is Italian and maybe you are looking for a French restaurant for the traditional Christmas eve meal?
When we have skiied in France at Christmas we have borrowed a fondue set from the residence for Christmas eve and purchased the traditional Buche de Noel (yule log) from a boulangerie for pudding.

Certainly book any restaurant there as soon as possible, especially at Christmas. You risk ending up wandering around looking for somewhere otherwise. Claviere is indeed lovely also, but not an easy walk away for sure.

Would also recommend Caesars - we have had Christmas Eve dinner there before. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and delicious food.

We are in what appear to be some nice self-catering, but we have some friends coming up from Vallouise to share the Christmas dinner so booked with no issues at Caesars. The Terraces du Chalvet do not accept bookings after 12.30 on any day.
Thank you all for your help, now just counting down the days. It does help a little that it is all white outside today .

A quick note of thanks for the Caesars recommendation including the advice to book in advance. Friends came up from their place in Vallouise and we all had a lovely Xmas eve dinner. Ended the night with the waiter and the patron refilling our glasses with génépi and successfully making it back to our places despite icy roads. Note that it is cash only but there was a distributeur 30 metres away.
Best wishes for the new year all.
