Hi looking for some advice. Travelling to Valmenier on 21st Jan. Fly to Turin and looking for transfer ideas . Have got quotes but quite expensive. Thinking if hiring a car in Turin. Has anyone done this or hired a car to travel to a resort . What should we be thinking about . Motorway drive not a problem just concerned about drive up to resort.Just not confident . Usually just book a package . Thanks in advance

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

The road up from the Maurienne main valley to Valmeinier 1800 is beautiful and well built out. Nothing to worry about, just don't drive too fast in all those picturesque hamlets you cross.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Tunnel toll is probably going add a fair whack on!
Drive to Valmeinir is a decent road & easy enough, but does get quite busy.
Might need to make sure any hire car has winter tyres depending on whatever law they have decided to adopt (not been to France for a while & did hear winter tyres supposed to becoming compulsory).
You can get a bus from Maurienne town & a train to that town (cant remember which town - if its Jean or Michael though!)

You can get the train from Turin to Saint Michel de Maurienne and then take a bus through altibus (you will need to book it) up to Valmeinier. This link should take to to a route planner that will give you the bus price, just enter St Michel de Maurienne as departure point and whichever Valmeinier village you are staying in

The frejus tunnel is about €50 return trip and the journey up the hill from St Michel to Valmeinier is not at all difficult though you do need to make sure your hire car has winter tyres or snow chains (it is now law in France from 1st November to 31st March to have either of these options).
If you hire a car you need to make sure you can take it from Italy into France, this is not typically standard and some of the car hire companies charge an extra daily fee to take across the border.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Welcome to SHs, @Green. Loads of us have driven regularly to ski resorts, and mostly it's no problem at all - especially if your car has winter tyres, which it probably WON'T have if you rent in Turin. If no winter tyres, chains in the car are compulsory driving north from Turin but you need to be sure they're there, and be sure you know how to fit them. There are lots of youtube videos - your rented chains will be standard basic, not that easy to fit until you've done it a few times. If you're unsure, and don't want any risk of having to get to grips with putting on chains in a snowy laybye (Valmeinier is quite high), better take one of the other options.

it has gone up a quite lot and to benefit from the cheaper rate you need to make sure you are less than 7 days (up to midnight on the following week). This is generally ok for a week's ski trip.
Be careful with trains, it takes quite some time to get to the airport and there are not many trains per day.

It might be worthwhile looking at the rome2rio.com website as it gives bus, train, car and taxi options in various combinations.
Unlike others, I don't have any local knowledge to offer but it does say the 268 bus from Turin airport runs every 20 mins during the day.
