Poster: A snowHead

Looking for some advice
I'm thinking of posting some skis to my daughter in France.
Will the French customs charge import duty?
Cheers

I think they will, yes. Import duty and VAT.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

My son used a company called My Baggage to send a suitcase home from France.
It might be worth getting a quote from them to send the skis to France. They will be able to clarify what charges apply.

I was literally going to post something very similar. I hope you don't mind me piggy backing this thread. If I buy skis from a shop in France do I have to pay the French vat and then the uk's import tax too?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@dave_3, you should be able to reclaim the French VAT. If you are bringing the skis home with you post holiday the chances of anyone spotting them on the way into the UK is small so you probably wont have to pay any import duty.
@Roger Mayne, any goods sent from the UK into the EU will be subject to both VAT & import duty. The exact amount will vary depending on the type of goods. The shipping company will also charge for the admin involved. If new items it will be cheaper and easier to order them from a supplier within the EU.

@munich_irish, sorry. I meant I'm buying them online from the UK but using a French online shop

@dave_3, The shop should make that clear. For example, Snowleader, a French retailer based in Lyon states:
'For orders being delivered to the United Kingdom, please place the order at www.snowleader.co.uk . We will apply British VAT (20%) to all the items on orders under £135 excl. VAT.
All orders on this website are dispatched from France and are therefore eligible for customs clearance fees and customs charges.
VAT is calculated on products only. Shipping costs are not included in this calculation.
The UK Government has set a threshold of £135 excluding VAT to outline the procedures of how the VAT will be paid:
Below £135 excluding VAT - VAT is payable directly on our site on the total amount of your order.
Above £135 excluding VAT - VAT is payable directly to the carrier when you receive your parcel.
Please note: different carriers have different charges, here are the details of the charges to be paid to your delivery driver (unless otherwise stated, all prices below exclude VAT)' Details are here https://www.snowleader.co.uk/en/delivery-returns-vat-united-kingdom#delivery
I bought skis from them did not pay French VAT. I did pay UK VAT, import duty (3% I think) and an administration/customs clearance fee (around £12).
TrekInn/SnowInn, on the other hand, are based in Spain and deal with all the UK VAT, import duty and administration and include that in the price you pay them, regardless of the value of the goods.
