Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

An Italian alternative to Sauze d'Oulx

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
So, we're looking to book for late Feb / early March 2023. Over the past 10 years we've been to Sauze d'Oulx 4 times and have really enjoyed it each time. This year, though, we fancy going somewhere different to Via Lattea but still in Italy, though none of us really have much knowledge of many other Italian resorts (I've been to La Thuile before but outside of that not much else).

What we're hoping for:
- Short transfer from the airport (we got nicely used to it being 1 hour 15 by minibus at Sauze, but ideally anything less than 2 hours).
- Decent size ski area.
- We've all been skiing/boarding for many years so red-heavy resorts are much better than blue.
- We're not massively 'rad' these days so off-piste potential would only be areas easily accessed from the lifts (so some decent areas just off the main pistes really).
- Would ideally like to find an apartment(s) rather than hotel. We have up to 8 travelling, so perhaps most likely to find 2x 2-bed apartments.
- A bit of life in the evenings would be good. Sauze is on the livelier scale of Italian ski resorts, I get that, but something with a few decent bars and restaurants would be nice.

Would appreciate any advice, I'm at the start of my research journey so it feels a bit daunting looking at somewhere totally new!

Champoluc is a good option. The town is small and not very lively but we have had a few great nights drinking there. The mountain is brilliant for intermediate skiers, looks small enough on a piste map but there are a lot of very long pistes. It’s quiet enough, very cheap and has plenty of great food too.

If you would be willing to do a 2-2.5hr transfer many (many) more Italian resorts become viable (viz your other criteria). Although a short transfer is great it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for us. It would mean missing out on some top Italian skiing and foody stuff. But if it is for you then +1 for Champoluc.

The transfer time criteria limits you, but sticking to that the area that immediately springs to mind is somewhere in the Dolomites, maybe Val Gardena, under 2 hrs from Innsbruck, access to a vast ski area (600km), not much off-piste but a bit if they have fresh snow.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

We’re flexible on all aspects, a short transfer time is preferred but if adding an hour on to the trip brings in much better options then we’d be daft not to consider that.

Thanks.

I have been to the Sella Ronda a few times staying in Corvara, Val Gardena and Arabba and always had a great time though it tends to have been in Jan/Feb as the snow can be a bit rubbish at the very start and end of the season
The mountain food has been better than France which is a plus
San Cassiano has some great restaurants if you are pushing the boat out

I'd definitely second that!

We're going to Corvara for the 4th or 5th time, great slopes, fab food & good early apres in the "cowshed"

It's worth a look snowHead

Fly to Verona for Madonna Di Campiglio and ski the Brenta Dolomites? At 2.5 hours transfer it’s a bit outside the stated ideal.

However, MdC has a bit of life - a charming town. Easy access to a lot of red pistes. Some great mountain restaurants. Great sense of travel, heading towards Folgarida (for example).

The Brenta Dolomites are stunning and easily enough skiing (with some lift accessed, close to piste, off-piste) for a week.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

+1, we really like this resort, only potential downside for the OP is that the ski area isn't as large as Sauze d'Oulx
