 Dilema....
Hired some Salomon Scream 8's at Easter and liked them, they are now for sale on Edge2Edge's website as ex-hire for £220 inc bindings.
Have asked E2E and they say they are in excellent condition have been used 4-6 times and serviced in between.
Now, I've already got my own skis but am starting to outgrow them, so these would be a replacement, and I know I like them cos I've already skied on some, so it seems like a good deal, but is it a good idea?
I'm not worried about scratches on the top cos they'd get those anyway, as long as the base and edges are in good nick, and I'd get 14 days to return them if I wasn't happy, but it has been mentioned to me that skis wear out with servicing and so they might not last too much longer as they've already been serviced several times already, also I don't know how much "abuse" they've taken, even if they appear to be ok.
Any advice???

Sarah, there is, supposedly, a finite amount of use that predetermines the life of a ski. I think it's about 100 days, so given that the avaerage skier will use their skis for 2/3 weeks per year say 10/15 days then that's between 7 -10 years, with servicing at least once and maybe twice per year. So, if these skis have been used for 4-6 times that could be between 28 - 84 days, depending on weekly or fortnightly booking and may have been seviced 4 or 6 times. Personally, I don't believe the finite life story, I have a pair of Salomon Pilot 10s that are at least 5 years old and have been used by ski guides everyday for 2 seasons and they're fine. They will also have received more abuse than an average skier could inflict in a lifetime. £220 seems a reasonable price, that's probably what Edge2Edge paid for them.

Never had my own skis so can't comment, but check this out for another option using good old ebay

Mrs NBT's skis lasted less than 40 skiing days and perhaps 6 or 7 services beofre the ski tech advised that the bases were getting so thin, any future services might go through the base entirely.
I'd also be wary of ebay after my experiences although with care you can get a bargain

That's probably due to the aggressive service that most stores do, they tend to grind the bases each time and sharpen base and side edges each time. Your bases won't last long that way.
Most shops offer full service or just waxing, sometime you just don't need the full service. I have that once a year on my skis from a local store to grind out base irregularities which I don't have the tools to do myself.

Just bumping this back up - the skis were always done by the same shop (at home in stockport), we went in after each holiday and the ski tech would advise whether we needed full service of just a wax,
henceforth, they'll be done in resort before we come home
|
