Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Petrol shortage in France

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Bit of a mare driving from Grenoble to Lyon yesterday as I had to hunt around for petrol as many stations are out, or out of certain grades. Eventually found a super U but they were rationing to 30 euros per car. The issue appears to be strikes at refineries, or the Swiss, or Brexit, who knows? The govt. has released part of the strategic reserve they were supposed to be keeping for winter. Diesel seems to be less of an issue.

Anyway, if you are travelling in France at the moment take care not to run down too low as you may not find petrol in the first place you stop.

Yes, drove from Grenoble to Calais yesterday and there were several service stations without diesel. Flagged up well in advance on the sign gantries though.

Just popped over to Intermarché in Châtel, no queues, no apparent shortages, but there did seem to be a 30 eu limit displayed at the pump (I filled up last week so didn't look in detail).

Nothing evident in Super-U Les Houches … but we topped up, just in case, probably fractionally exacerbating the problem.

For a beginner yes but need to blame brexit aswell, for the bonus point you need to tag stanton so he can add his happy go lucky take to it Very Happy

Wife just drove Calais to Pontarlier today.
Plenty of availability in northern France (but as she'd topped up in Dover, didn't stop then.)
Once she started to look, around Chalons & south of there, there were 3 Services in a row, 2 of which were out of diesel, and one where she queued for 45 mins, only to find it was cash only (which she didn't have.)
Anyway, she finally found one near Dijon, so (near) panic over!

Or if you're a Tory, you just Blame Someone Else - it can be anyone. And if you can't find an existing group to blame, then invent one. Just make sure that at least some of its members live in North London.

Was unable to fill up the car in Ferney-Voltaire before returning it to the French side of GVA yesterday - the E.Leclerc station was closed, and the Carrefour station had no petrol (but did have diesel). Was not aware of the fuel shortage, would have left a bit more time and filled up in Switzerland had I'd known.

Not looking forward to seeing what Europcar charge me for half a tank!

Cycling around Lyon yesterday and a lot of stations out of Petrol, less so Diesel. It is largely down to panic buying now. I have enough in the tank to get back to Grenoble tomorrow. Hopefully will be able to find some over there.

@davidof, thanks, also @homphomp for the map. While the map seems to miss many filling stations, those it includes suggest there are usually working ones not too far from those currently out of supplies.

@j b, On my journey from Lyon to Grenoble this morning only one service station had petrol, an Esso with 98 at 2 euros 10 per liter. I'll have to have a look around this evening to see what the situation is to the north of Grenoble as I need to fill up or I'll be stuck.

Update:
Use of jerrycans has been banned
Rationing in force in the South East of France (Vaucluse etc.)

Not easy finding fuel north of Grenoble. The various websites (gouv, monessence etc) don't give an accurate picture. Finally managed to fill up with SP98 at a supermarket.

A bit "disaster movie" feel to things with people filling up jerrycans, fights breaking out at the pumps, huge queues with people tooting their horns etc.

[Update] The autoroute service stations 10km north of Grenoble both seemed to have petrol/diesel so the picture is patchy.

Huge que at Total in Sallanches this morning everone else out of fuel execept Aviva on the Autoroute, because they charge hogh enough that no one wants to pay. Back in Les houches I was queing for diesel at Total. Got told mid que that they were shutting pumps ....not that they were running out of fuel. Super U les Houches still has diesel at the moment, so filled up there.

€107 is the answer to that Shocked

€19 refuelling fee + 23 litres @ €3.19 per litre (roughly double the current pump costs in Ferney-Voltaire)

More than doubled the cost of my 6 day rental.

@musehead, your 6 day rental cost was less than €107?

Shows how low car rental costs can be sometimes and still a bargain all up when compared to peak times.

Yes, I've found that Europcar in France particularly often reduces their prices at the last minute. I had a 6-day rental booked in advance for £220, but I was able to cancel for free 2 days before and rebook the same car for £90.

I managed to do something similar 2 or 3 times last winter during the ski season too, so it's always worth checking!

@musehead, yup that arbitrage is something I’ve done in the past (but not as great a success as you given we tend to go at peak times). Good to see its coming back as there hadn’t seem to be much scope for it more recently with the drop in fleet sizes with covid.

Situation is "tendu" in Paris with nearly 4 hour queues at one service station. Apparently people have been driving up to 25km out of the capital to get fuel. The video on this page is worth watching, everyone getting a bit tense like I saw today.

Well, now looks as if we will be driving over on Friday (it's taken a couple of days to find someone to feed the cat!) We'll come via Rotterdam so can top up the tank before entering France, which should give us a quarter tank still on arrival in St Gervais. But definitely hoping that @davidof is right and once all the people who have been driving around with less than half a tank have filled up in panic there won't be the same demand.

The French government have imposed a little used law called ‘requisition’ which basically forces workers back to work in certain circumstances. Currently only impacts Esso strikers which should allow for more deliveries to be made, but likely to be extended to those Total employees on strike and the French spokesman Oliver veran says it will take several days for petrol stations to be replenished and things back to normal within 2 weeks, just in time for French October school holidays.

I had no idea about this. I took a rented car back to Gva airport today and drove into Ferney Voltaire to fill up, thinking that I knew exactly where to go, but encountering massive road works chaos and diversions. Anyway, found the petrol station busy and waited in a queue. No limit on quantity, but the machine refused our first three credit cards, including my French credit card.
