Poster: A snowHead
|
Morning all, some U.S. based friends are planning a two-centre trip, Andermatt followed by Les Menuires (both on their Epic Passes). They fly in and out of GVA, and plan to transfer via GVA when they switch resorts, which seems sensible. Can anyone recommend transfer options for their two round-trips please? I imagine van transfers work best for Les Menuires, but suspect GVA-Andermatt-GVA might be better by train? Or is there a transfer company that does it? TIA for any advice

From Geneva change at Brig and onto Andermatt. Nice journey. 52chf each way with a saver pass. 2 trains an hour until 17:00

Take a look at the Swiss transportation SBB website. The schedules for the winter don't come out for a couple of months but the current timetable should be a good guide. Be aware that many ticket prices shown on the site assume you have an annual SBB half-fare card (a no-brainer for residents but not usually for visitors). There are a number of ticket options so research those. Just a tip - the SBB site won't always load if you're running a VPN.
The airport is referenced as 'Genève-Aéroport' on the route planner. The train station is part of the main airport building complex (diagram below)
If they haven't already, it'll be worth taking a look at the main Switzerland Tourism website MySwitzerland.com. If your friends want some coffee table brochures to look at in the meantime, they can order these as downloads or postal paper versions from the website.

Yes as per @LaForet, you’ll want to download the SBB app (is it available on UK/US App Store?) and buy the ticket in advance. The saver pass allows you to use any train on that day for a flat rate of 52chf and so is the one to go for. They are limited in quantity hence the need to book early - tickets can be booke 60 days before travel. For the super saver option you need to specify the train you’ll take so no good for people relying on traffic / other connections.

There's a summary page on the GVA airport website* that lists the scheduled regional buses, destinations and operating days: BUS AU DÉPART. Companies include Alpbus, Alpybus, ChamExpress etc. but it's just the main ones and apologies, not being familiar with the French ski areas so much, I don't know if the destinations listed are near or transit Les Menuires. Interestingly, I hadn't realised one of the regular services is GVA«»Chamonix (daily, by Swisstours).

Thanks for that @LaForet, it is on a sub-menu of the GVA website I had never explored. Could be useful, though that current timetable only goes up to the end of September. My guess is there will be an autumn timetable before they release the one for the ski season.
As you say there are lots of operators serving Chamonix (some stopping off other places along the Arve valley), and Morzine. Plus other operators not listed, presumably limited to the main summer and winter seasons. The few that go outside Haute Savoie all seem to go to towns rather than resorts (Grenoble, Lyon, Chambery) but there may be more possibilities after December.
