Hi- has anybody done a DIY ski safari? For example in the Dolomites, Austria or anywhere else with a large single pass area. Either staying in huts or a mixture of huts and hotels?
Any advice gladly recieved.

Austria is ideal. We did a tour of Salzburgerland a while back. There's a ski pass that covers the entire area, something like 2700km of pistes.

@ed123, do you mean just a multi resort trip? Or a multi day multi hut tour (i.e. randonnee?)

The idea is I think.
1. Multi resort trip
2. 1 lift pass ideally
3. Stay in huts / or basic hotels
4. Skiing between resorts / huts by lift accessed slopes (as opposed to skinning).
5. Options for bad weather / snow- by road / rail.
But organised by ourselves (mind you Heidi's trip seemed very reasonably priced).
Kids are now 21, 18 and 14 (or will be next spring). All are strong skiers and have done several weeks cycle touring and the Tour du Mont Blanc. It might well just be a splinter group.
I'm guessing that the Dolomites are ideal and that various bits around Innsbruck also. But I'm not familiar with either really.

@ed123, I'm not sure how often you can find resorts that are skiable between without actually being more formally linked? i.e. skinning required.

@under a new name, some of the helpful links about the Dolomites seem very promising with the prospect of a long trip with areas which are either linked by pistes of easy enough transport.

@ed123, by road doesn’t really fit your OP.?
Not quite sure what the “safari” element refers to? Around you just skiing in various resorts?
You need the Haute Route or similar.

This thread reminds me that I need to buy another set of wool WW2 army pants. I have done some hut skiing but never hut to hut touring. Cheers.

Hi- not really no.
Some large linked ski pass areas can be skied on piste across quite vast distances- the Dolomites for example. It is possible to ski for days between resorts on piste (or if required by taking short buses) and also to stay up the mountain in huts accessible from the pistes.
One of the links someone helpfully posted has a selection of routes. I suspect that there will be similar opportunities around Innsbruck, but possibly not as well linked by piste.
The query relates to suggested routes and most importantly suggestions as to exactly where to stay. Huts open and facilities etc, although I'd expect that huts on piste and open in winter would be nice rather than dormitory / communal mattresses.

In the Dolomites the refuge above the restaurant at the top of the Laguzuoi cable car can be useful (combined with skiing the Cinque Torri)

Not exactly what you’re asking for but I reckon you could make a cool week long trip (or longer) out of the Magic Pass using Swiss public transport
Eg Villars / Les Diablerets / G3000 -> Les Marecottes -> Nax -> Val d’Anniviers -> Saas Fee. Substitute/add Further interesting options like Arolla, Ovronnaz or Anzere.
I assume there are on mountain accommodation options / alpine huts at most of these although haven’t checked.
