Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Nice to know that they are completely up to speed with everything and have a little spare time to concentrate on the important things in the works of skiing...... Like protecting Skiing itself from those bastardo's at the Schnauzer Club of Great Britain. Well done chaps.......

@MorningGory, don't worry, it soon will when Tony gets to hear about it using the words "Ski Club of Great Britain", then the purge will begin.

It could even be a "Hundred Flowers Campaign" by SCGB to see who the dissenters are then eliminate them.

I am a member of the Schnuazer club as it happens, and we are not happy at being steamrollered by Trademark Tony. We have had several people turn up at our dog shows in ski gear recently and it is very awkward having to ask them to leave.

Not all that exciting. Trademark Tony applied to TM the letters SCGB. Schnauzer Club of GB objected not unreasonably but apparently agreed to let Tony have it in return for a free licence (or whatever) to use it in their own field. The Shotgun Club of Gretna & Borders will probably be upset when Tony comes down on them like a ton of bricks but then they'll have shotguns....

As part of the agreement all Schnauzers will receive complementary membership of the ski club of great britain; and all ski club of great britain members will reciprocally receive a free Classic Schnauzer haircut - "close cropped hair across the body, with hair on lower legs, beards and eyebrows left long", and a worming tablet.

TT’s explanation posted on the SCGB members past, present and future Facebook page…

“…The Ski Club of Great Britain(r) applied to register SCGB(r) as a trademark as there was documentary evidence of the club using the designation S.C.G.B.(tm) since at least 1913. This registration came to the notice of the Schnauzer Club of Great Britain who had been using the mark since 1929. The normal way of approaching these things in 'trademark land' is for the other party to file an opposition, which they did, and put things on pause while the two parties enter into negotiations. The alternative would be to go to trademark court which is an expensive exercise and, in my opinion at least, would not have been a good use of member subscriptions. As the two organisations have been trading simultaneously for over seventy years in blissful ignorance of the others existence there seemed to be no possibility of confusion on the part of consumers. Hence, the Ski Club board agreed to enter into a cooperation agreement so that the Schnauzer Club could continue to use the mark, after which their opposition was withdrawn. The UK IPO were happy with this and so the SCGB(r) mark is now a registered trademark of the Ski Club of Great Britain(r) with the Schnauzer Club of Great Britain as an approved user. I hope this explains things. The 'Stray Cats of Great Britain' have not approached us for a similar cooperation agreement as, as far as I am aware, this designation is only used in references on the web and no formal member's organisation exists as such. However, the opposition period has now expired so if they did appear then they would be required to take out a formal license to use the (now) registered trademark. Representatives of the Stray Cats of Great Britain could not be reached for comment as they appear to have strayed.”

..Nick

Interesting that Trademark Tony let's slip the veneer and refers to "consumers" rather than "members". I mean that's usually why trademarks need to be protected and litigated - businesses not wanting others riding on their revenue train.

Is this what an entrepreneur, brilliant incubator of new start ups and a Fellow at Clare Hall spends his time doing? Well done, it could be quite confusing for consumers/members when being faced with SCGB being used by both the Ski Club and the Schnauzer Club.

Hey, who KNOWS how many people have been put off from taking up winter sports and got sucked into the seemy (and fuzzy) underbelly of the Mittelschnauzer, Riesenschnauzer, and Zwergschnauzer...

**update** in researching the above, I got ABSOLUTELY sucked into the Schnauzer site.... the names are... BRILLIANTLY INSANE!

IMHO 'Miccosukeees In Cahoots with Kathalan' was a most worthy winner of the 'Open Bitch' class at the 2022 SCGB Open, although how 'Violis Wait N See' beat 'Dayporium The Conjurer at Jennayr' in miniature dog is beyond me...

Are he/they trying to prevent anyone else in the UK using the initials SCGB, or just anyone in areas relating to winter sports? If the latter I wouldn't have thought there was much overlap with the Schnauzer Club, so unclear why they had to reach an agreement. If the former there are quite a few other users of those initials*, so it could get interesting.

*Serbian Council of GB, Serama Club of GB, various companies using those initials for products (who may have much deeper pockets), various medical uses, ... They are probably lucky that the unconnected company actually called 'SCGB Ltd' appears to have been wound up earlier this year - perhaps someone should register something similar. Very Happy

I imagine he came to an agreement with the Schnauzers for a free license to use SCGB as it was in the period when an objection could be raised to his Tm application and could have complicated his registration. Now that that period has expired and he has the Tm don’t expect him to be so generous, this look like is just a land grab to try to get other SCGBs to pay but I guess protects the SkiCGB from someone doing it to them.

Can someone start the Snowboard Club of Great Britain and see what happens? Would it be like gluing a slice of toast, butter side out, to a cats back and dropping it out of a window to see if it lands, of just hovers above the ground spinning?

If the Universe ends, don't blame me.

Trademark Tony has already tried to TM "snowheads". His excuse was "ski club 2.0" in the banner and therefore must be part of SCGB

His whole attitute there was curious - he was basically saying he was dim enough to make the mistake rather than malicious which his CV rather belied. But then he doubled down on arrogance rather than contrition. Clearly he still believes there is value to the members in these IP protection activities, fiddling while Rome burns rather springs to mind.
