Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@radar, useful info…what’s the reference to the UK sticker ? Next season will be my first drive to ski resorts so forgive my ignorance.

Last year our Government, in their wisdom, decided that the 'distinguishing sign' for cars of the United Kingdom should change from GB to UK. So they notified the United Nations, which is how you do such things.

So we all had to buy a new sticker for the back of our cars.

And many drivers didn't bother. In fact, many drivers didn't bother with the old sticker either.

For £1.99 it seems like a sensible thing to do though.

@radar, on my way back from Le Mans the other week, it was 2euros 20cents per litre (E10) at a supermarket of the Caen ring road, motorway services was 2:40 from memory, but avoided it!!!

diesel was slightly cheaper, but first time in over 10 years i have driven a petrol instead of a diesel car in Europe!!!

sadly, not a great deal of difference from over here at the moment

diesel on the French autoroute was 2.09€ and 1.94€ in Chambery hypermarket. At the time that was £1.60 a litre in sterling (probably less now the pound has risen) A significant saving. I think about £18 less to fill up my wife's Skoda Superb.

Germany removed taxes on diesel/petrol, but apparently they stations in the autobahn decided to keep the taxes for themselves. One advise: Take one of the stations just off the autobahn:-)

@MogulMonkey The full details of the new 'UK' sticker are in this thread here. Basically, one of the large white labels with black 'UK' on it will be valid everywhere across the continent. Alternatively get a new number plate with 'UK' at the bottom of the stripe on the left, or a stick-on 'UK' that covers the existing GB letters. If you haven't driven down before, I did a blog piece about the various things you might need to do in preparation here. It's for clients driving to Switzerland, but most of the advice is generic.

Tip if you are travelling in France on a Friday, Saturday or Monday. Check whether Géant Casino still have their fuel offer. Fill up and the first 40 litres are €0.85. You pay full price at the pump and take your receipt and the card used to pay at pump to customer service and they give you a voucher for the difference between price on the day and €0.85. We got a €47 voucher. Valid on the Friday, Saturday or Monday provided you spend over €120. Not that difficult to buy supplies to that value.

https://www.geantcasino.fr/landing/carburant-a-1e/

It looks like it is changing to €1.00 but still a nice wrinkle and the link above still says €0.85 for this weekend. We’ll try it again on the way home.

@DJL, is it a fairly regular offer, as the date stated is for this coming weekend?

I got all excited as the Geant store in Albertville is included in the promotion, and hoping to stock up on all manner of goodies on our way up to les menuires.
But, unfortunately I will not be there until Christmas Sad Sad

will see if I can sign up to an email alert!

@terrygasson, The offer has been on for nearly every Friday, Saturday and either Monday or Wednesday since mid February T's&C's have changed. Net price has varied between €0.85 and €1.00, Max qualifying fuel between 40 and 50 Litres, Minimum spend in shop that you can set the voucher against has varied between €100 and €120.

@DJL's, link above is the one that seems to remain current

Combine that with the Geant "CasinoMax" offer/subscription of 10 Euros per month (3 Euros if over 65) for 10% off in store then you can be in for some serious savings.

We are driving down into France for a holiday soon in our UK registered car. I wondered whether we might be able to get an automatic doofer for the tolls, or set up an account linked to our numberplate (like we do for the Dartford bridge)?

It's been a long time since we have driven in France and I'm hoping I don't still need to have a passenger paying cash/card at every booth.

It’s not uncommon for fuel prices in Austria to vary (sometimes considerably) through the day. Often cheaper in the morning, especially on week days.

@milzibkit, yes you can. Several threads on it, just search "doofer" in the search box at the top.

I use Emovis https://www.emovis-tag.co.uk/ who accept UK payments. Some others will recommend other providers but I think most savings are as broad as they are long.

@milzibkit, we also use Emovis because of the convenience of having a Direct Debit on a UK bank account.

If its a really long time since you did the journey then they have reduced the number of toll points. They no longer have tolls at the crossover point from one charge area to the next eg sanef to aprr. On the journey to the south of France there tolls south of Calais, north of Reims, south of Reims, north of Lyons, south of Lyons, north and south of Aix en Provence.

Diesel around €1.80 off the motorways in France today, including Bourg St Maurice, so pushing down towards £1.50 depending on exchange rate. If they can sell it at that price, we should be able to also.

@rjs, Indeed it is. Point being that our government could do the same, by reducing duty by more than the previous 5p, which they get back anyway through the extra VAT since prices started rising rapidly. In effect, they've done nothing.

Given the cost of Everything Else on a ski holiday, the marginal difference between one gallon of fuel and another is surely trivial? Just slightly less aggressive driving will probably achieve more.

For all those convinced of the rhetoric of politicians (basically different shades of doo doo). One in three cars I saw didn't have the correct sticker. And it's a reasonable leap they therefore didn't have the rest of the forms (V5 anyone?) and equipment.

And I saw nobody stopped. That was a slam dunk for the French police if they wanted.

Some things are roughly the same everywhere. Beer and fuel are two of them.

Miltz, google emovis for the doofer.

Dartford tunnel is 2.50 each way I think. Google that too and pay in advance. You don't need to create an account.
