Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wrong time of year. Book an appointment for early September when you get a recommendation.

Stocks and therefore choice will be low at this time of year. Later in the year might be better as @Dave of the Marmottes, suggests.

Solutions for Feet in Bicester would be the popular recommendation I'd guess.

Having now bought from snow and rock and Ellis Brigham in Bristol, I'd not bother, and instead travel up to Bicester to solutions 4 feet for my next pair.

Ok. but husband is wrong, Toofy Grin We're always wrong. Toofy Grin My personal choice was Bicester, but find the best choice for you and then be prepared to travel. For me it was 4 hours there , 2 hours in Bicester and 4 hours back. Compared to the time and cost of ski holidays over the next 10 years this is a very small investment.

Of course you can always get this decision wrong and save a lot of money by stopping skiing because your boots hurt.

Once you have 'committed to buying your own boots the difference in time and cost between buying from "chain store" and boot specialist is very little when spread over the life of the boots

@Savory, I take it he’s prepared to travel further than Bristol to use them? Then shouldn’t be a drama to go further afield to get them?

Indeed, and she could travel for decent boots and let him sort himself out.

Or buy in resort then no need to travel anywhere else

i am not going to tell anyone where to go to get their boots BUT what i will say is this season do it early! most independents will have stock August-September the chains may be a bit later on past experience.... Supply chain issues around the world keep getting talked about, and they are affecting the ski industry as well and many others, i ordered our stock very early (about 2 month earlier than normal for a couple of brands) so that i could be sure of getting it, and even then i am not confident that we will get everything that we ordered.... so keeping it simple don't expect a massive selection of boots anywhere in January

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I've decided my boots are probably due for renewal - They're 2001 vintage Technica TNT Carbons which have done about 3 weeks a year every year since. Recently they've become very uncomfortable - I blame COVID/BREXIT. Toofy Grin

Anyhow - I've UK size 13 feet, which kinda limits the selection normally available. Are you saying I probably need to get something sorted in Aug/Sept? What kind of stock levels do you typically carry for those of us with non standard plates of meat? Is it one or two pairs and once they're gone, they're gone?

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@Judwin, normally we have 1-2 pairs form a handful of models, doing tings early means we have half a chance of finding stock if we dont have it

Ok, but aren't the implications of that potentially two trips to Bicester/Wherever - first one to measure up, try on and discover nothing fits, second trip to get the correct 'shape' boot in a size that does fit?

Does husband want well fitted boots, or does he want convenience? I know which i'd prefer, but i'm not your husband.....

If there are two of you it makes even more sense to go to S4F in Bicester. As CEM (the owner) says go in Aug/Sept when they have the full range in. You can make a day trip out of it and buy some designer tat at Bicester Village or visit Oxford.

Show hubby this thread or get him to register. And tell us why not!?

Or go somewhere else, get the wrong boots as that's what they have in stock, regret it on first skiing holiday, and end up going to Bicester anyhow!

I think we've been here many times before. Ski boot perfection is a dark art and there are not many highly recommended practitioners in the UK. That doesn't mean others can't have satisfactory experiences at other retailers but it's a bit of a lottery re your foot specifics, their skill, your willingness to accomodate on the performnce v comfort scale or pay for key elements like footbeds or aftermarket liners. Many of us who've been down the path a few times will say that nothing ruins skiing like sore or damaged feet but that doesn't mean that a suboptimal boot fit will automatically lead to sore or damaged. Indeed an optimal boot fit can change over time as liner packs out or the foot changes.

With all that I think you can improve your odds by booking somewhere like S4F or Rivington Alpine or Bartletts etc and calling upfront to ascertain optimum stock levels etc. Your task is made more difficult the more remote you are from such vendors and the less standard your foot size/shape is.

If you are in Bristol it’s an hour to hour and a half to Bicester. Could be combined with visit to Oxford or the Cotswolds. I went last weekend to solutions for feet. Yes you pay for the fitting spot but you are dealt with by an expert who knows what they’re doing rather than a retail assistant on living wage. I felt the time was taken to make sure I had the right fitting boot for my feet. I was prepared to pay for the comfort of expertise on the basis the boots will probably do 20-25 weeks over the next 15 years so £3 a week for expertise.

yes it does sometimes mean that, but show me a shop who actually has a wide range in that sort of size (plenty will say they have and in reality only actually have 1-2)

i guess it comes down to would you rather do this properly or just quickly , if its the latter you are looking for we probably aren't the place for you

Not complaining, just trying to understand the process (god I hate that word!) so I can plan for the worst and hope for the best. You can expect me to darken your doorstep sometime in August.

I would also note that you should be assuming a minimum of two trips anyway as even a relatively good fit will often need tweaking after it had been skied on (the difference being on a good fit it takes a day or three while with a bad for it takes a run...)
